I can imagine it being one of the supported formats, just not the only one. What model of TV is it?They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

I use handbrake which is free takes a bit of messing about to get setup I convert quite a few files to mkv
Download - HandBrake
Before that used a program called autogk
AutoGK Homepage - THE tool for XviD / DivX conversion0 -
Well thats what it says in the book.......
You're right, and this question's been asked before by someone else.
You could try tmpenc that was suggested in post #6 above.
If it doesn't do the job for you then there's an alternative in this thread here:-https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2500713Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
Bad show from Sony. Why would an HDTV only support MPEG1, about as basic a codec as there is these days?

There has to be some error here, as MPEG1 is roughly equivalent to VHS, in quality and would look abysmal on a HDTV, just like some of the SD filler channels imho. Are you sure the TV won't play Xvid or DiVX encoded .avi, as DivX and XVid are MPEG4 encoded using the .avi container0 -
Well two people now say it definitely only supports MPEG1. I'd be inclined to believe the manual is wrong before I'd believe an HDTV would only play MPEG1 from a USB drive. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

many of the handheld media players will play MPEG4, so I can't see why a HDTV would be stuck with blocky, noisy MPEG1 I mean even many media players can manage a better resolution than the 352 x 288 (half DVD) used by MPEG1 that would look really bad scaled up to 1920 x 1080on a full HDTV.
What model TV is it?0 -
How about a dvd/divx player with usb ? I have a philips dvp5990 which has hdmi/upscaling/usb/plays avi's etc. It doesn't play everything tho' so I still have to convert some stuff. There must be newer/better ones around now.
Edit: as above, what model tv is it ?0 -
Hi guys...thanks for al your advise and info. It def DOES NOT play AVI....doesn't recognise it when you plug the USB in. Converted AVI using WINFF.....but to be honest the quality is pretty poor.

Best thing is prob to plug the laptop inti the TV to watch a film...but then the sound only comes through the laptop...so its either pluggin speakers into the lappy or straining your ears and watching/listening slighlty out of sync.......Not the best....but decent pic quality.0 -
Might not support avi playback, but what about mp4, etc? If you tell us the model either we'll be able to help you or you'll be able to prove our suspicions wrong.
Your TV will have audio in along with whatever method you're using to get video into it from the laptop, you should be able to get the laptop audio playing through the TV. It'll either be a 3.5mm socket or dual phonos. Either way you'll get a cable for a couple of quid. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0
