What device are you using the play the videos?0

I have a sony tv and can plug a USB into the TV but need to convert the films to the correct format for the TV to recognise and play them. Doesn't recognise AVI files so I am guessing it will be Mpeg4 format I need to convert them into.0

There's some confusion here.
Avi is a container. Not a video format. you can put all sorts of video inside an avi, including mpeg4.
One of the best bits of video encoding software is Staxrip.
You really need to work out what format (video and audio codecs and the container) the TV will play, then encode in that format. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Found my Sony Bravia Book. It shows vids in MPEG1 format not MPEG4 as I orginally thought.0

Really? MPEG1 is old stuff, pre DVD. Do you remember the Philips CDi, and VideoCDs? That was MPEG1. I'd be surprised if any TV these days with USB only supported MPEG1. 17 year old tech.
