Iphone question

Hi guys
Apologies if this has been posted before. I have recently acquired a brand new offline iphone 3GS.
After speaking to my network provider Orange today, they have informed me that I must use their £10 iphone specific date bundle if I want to use the phone. This gives me 750mb but also ties me into a contract for 18months.
I have a no contract sim only package and want to avoid any contract.
However, I have a friend who pays for their £5 a month package (with his iphone) and gets £500mb data and no contract. Which he never goes over. He has been using it sucessfully for a while.
The guy at Orange said I couldnt use this cheaper package as it wouldnt be enough MB's - and I run the risk of high bills and they 'would eventually know' if I was using an iphone and that I had to get the £10 package or nothing.
Does anyone else use the £5 package? Are Orange being honest with me or just trying to miss sell me something more expensive. I dont think I'll need over 500mb a month.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Every provider has sim only contracts that go month by month, the also alow you to add extra data etc, whoever told you that was lying like a labour politician, go search around.Approach her; adore her. 500 meg is either a lot or nothing, it depends on what you're going to doing with the phone?
If you're going to be doing a lot of streaming, it'll go in a couple of weeks. If you're going be just checking your email and a little surfing it's more than enough...0 -
On the iPhone you can keep an eye on how much data you're using anyway. I have unlimited data, so I don't have to worry about this, but if you was concerned then maybe you could keep checking back and then you will know when you need to slow down on the internet usage. You can also reset the stats whenever you want, so at the start of each new month you can easily hit reset and then you will never be able to go over your usage!Became Mrs C on 14th of August 20100

Also if Orange are going to be a pain in the a**e about the whole thing, get your PAC and go for an iPhone sim only deal on o2 or Vodafone, or a SIM only deal on another network.
The other thing to mention with Orange is that their SIM only deals are quite often provisioned on 2G SIMs only.0 -
on the 500mb issue depending on useage isn't realy too bad, I have an iphone and an ipad and share data on my account, the prices here are per month 500mb/£5 2gb/£10 10gb/£20, I put it up to the 10gb when I got the ipad and have put it down to the 2gb afeter looking at data used, I am a very heavy user, pre ipad max monthly use over 12 months was 680mb, that was only one month next max was 504mb max with ipad it has gone to just over 1gb, ok so here in the Isle of Man the main town centre is virtually covered with free wifi so it saves a bit, but unless you are downloading a lot or watching a lot of online vids then you should be ok, just remember to do downlods etc when at home on your wifi network, the other thing is to get an app to keep an eye on your useage there are a few about that give you an alarm when you are near your max, that way you wont incur heavy charges for going over.Approach her; adore her.
