dentist discount for students?

Im about to start uni, but also need to see a dentist for check ups etc haha

Does being a student entitle a discount on rates or do you have to pay full whack?

Are there any health insurance schemes about which gives student discounts?

cheers

During term time only you should be entitled to free treatment. You need an HC1 form.

You can pick up an HC1 claim form from a Jobcentre Plus Office or NHS hospital. Your doctor, dentist or optician may have one too. You can also request a form by telephoning 0845 850 1166.

The HC1 form can be used to claim help with NHS Prescriptions; NHS Dental Treatment; NHS wigs and fabric supports; sight tests, glasses and contact lenses; and travel to hospital for NHS treatment.

No, your entitled to free treatment until 18.

From 19 onwards you must fill in one of these forms annually to determine whether you get free treatment. [see post below, based on income most likely]

Students in full time education are usually exempt from many NHS charges, including dental treatment. The same as people on JSA etc.

I still think I'm right but perhaps its not because of your student status but the fact your on a low income ... as most students are.

Are you still with an NHS dentist or have you been paying privately? Either way you should stick with the dentist you are (if you are with one) as once you get away it may be hard to get into another one.

I would fill in a HC1 form - I did one of these last year as I was ill and not working (I am 25) and I got one back saying that I could have free prescriptions and free NHS dental treatment (just a pity that I am with a private dentist as can get into NHS dentist!

  • Out of interest (for the girlfriend).. when doing a modern apprentiship through a college are you still classed as full time student for things like this?

A point to think about, if your uni has a dentistry department, you may get into it quicker and not have to pay so much. You'll get 4th or 5th year dentists in training though!!

I did it when I was in Birmingham uni.

If you're at a university with a dental school you can usually get free treatment there...
