even if your dla paid for a mortgage you would need a large deposit.

    I think it depends tbh.

You don't actually require a large deposit to take part but it would obviously reduce the payments.

My friend is paying slightly less for her mortgage than she was paying to top up her private rent. If people are eligible for housing benefit then it is definitely worth looking into.

so what happens to those disabled people who cannot work but get married and have children and rely on benefits get a home or rent? Can they or does the government oppose this?

you don't provide sufficient information to let the posters on this forum give you specific information. Do stop being vague and respond to our queries as this will help us be more accurate and stop us wasting our time on you.

Is this an actual situation or just a hypothetical scenario? What benefits do you currently receive - ESA or DLA or have you merely self-diagnosed yourself as unable to work through sickness? Does your wife or you work, if so what is your earned income? Where are you living now? Is it only social housing or home ownership that you are interested in or would you consider renting a private property from a landlord?

Your local council website will explain how to apply for social housing and the allocation process for it. Some councils have no stock as they've been transferred to be managed by housing associations. Others operate choice based letting where vacant properties are advertised and the applicants have to 'bid' for it, those with the highest points/priority/date of application will 'win' it.

The council website (and the Shelter website) will also explain how to find private rentals and get this paid through housing benefit (now known as Local Housing Allowance for private sector tenants).

The LHA direct website will explain about housing benefit/local housing allowance, the size of property the household is eligible for and the maximum LHA payable for it according to where it is located. However, the actual sum of LHA received will depend on household income and other factors.

There are 1.3 million adults of working age receiving DLA, many of whom still work and many of whom arrange their own accommodation in the private sector or own their own properties (because their earned income allows them to). There are at least 2 million receiving Incapacity Benefit, many of whom are being moved onto JSA to seek work as they are no longer considered incapable of working under the new ESA rules which replaces IB.
