I was over charged by Asda and when I questioned it, mentioning the £2 gift card, I was told that because I hadn't left the store and 'gone home' I wasn't entitled to it. Anyone know if this is store policy or wrong advice?

That is wrong advice and a deliberate ploy to mislead you IMO .

My father in law swears that as long as you don't question it at the till and go to the customer services desk instead and ask them to correct it that you don't have to leave the store.

not sure if that works for all the branches though.

Your FIL is right - don't mention it at the till and take your receipt to customer services. They will often just try to give you the overpayment back - I usually look them in the eye and slide my saver card across the counter to them saying "Don't forget my £2" - rarely fails. Did have some jobsworth once saying that it only applied to Asda products and not branded goods??? Last year I collected around £48

ETA Does anyone know where I can find a copy of their terms & conditions regarding this £2 gift card?

  • I've just done a search on here to find this thread as I was told by a miserable customer service assistant in Asda this morning that the £2 giftcard scheme had finished "ages ago". When I told her that I'd automatically been given one when overcharged a couple of weeks ago without having to ask, she reluctantly took one off the display and added £2 to it.
  • I was recently overcharged in my local Asda (Southampton Civic Centre) and was refused the £2 giftcard when I asked (was never once offered).

I was told by the CS rep that it was because "it was cashier error" and therefore I didn't get the giftcard. Asked for the manager who refused right-out that such a scheme ever existed...

Needless to say I sent an E-Mail to Asda HO (on their website) and got a reply that the scheme does exist, apologising for the service I recieved and got my £2 giftcard in the post :)

I think managers get less of a pay packet if they give away more £2 gift vouchers so do their best to not offer it.

Although I shop in Asda quite frequently, I wasn't actually aware of this £2 gift card thing, and as I usually watch the till display like a hawk as things are going through I usually pick up errors before I leave the checkout - presumably I'd be better not doing that as then I'm not entitled to the gift card!

Anyway, a few weeks ago I bought a couple of bags of assorted salads, reduced on their sell-by date. They should have been £1.75 each and were reduced to 5p each. For some reason I must have been distracted at the till because it wasn't until I was walking away from the checkout I thought, hang on, didn't think the total should have been that much! Checked the receipt and one salad went through at 5p, the other at £1.75. I stopped at Customer Services, got my £1.70 refunded and was rather startled to be handed a gift card. I'm deaf so she might have mumbled something at me about it, so I didn't ask but just left the store then looked at the gift card which was for £2. I kept thinking it was a mistake (but spent it anyway!) so at least thanks to this thread I know what it was all about! And fair do to Asda, I didn't have to ask for it - wouldn't have done anyway as i didn't know about it! :T
