Same here, I have loads of little black beetles in my sweet peas. I have tried spraying them but they seem to be resilient little wotsits! Every time I cut the sweet peas and bring them into the house, these beetles all fly towards the windows. This happened last year as well.

  • I've never seen the little blighters before :-( I wonder if something I've grown this year but not before is what's attracted them. I've just bought some bug spray. Most of them say not to use on flowers in bloom, but this one doesn't. I'll try it on some I won't be too upset to lose first, though.
    Horrible things!

We seem to have masses of them as well, but mines are defo pollen beetles so not so worried now. Wish I'd seen your post before farway, I'd chopped off all my courgette heads :o
  • I got a piece of yellow plastic (carrier bag) and put a little cooking oil on it. Place it on the ground near the plants and the bugs go towards the yellow as its bright and get stuck in the oil. It hasn't stopped them completely from being on my plants, but does help!
  • Oooh I don't like this thread, I'll be having nightmares about tiny black beetles killing everything off! I've had blackfly in the past but, for some reason, they only gather on my nasturtiums, eventually smothering them they accumulate so quickly. They are such pests that for a couple of years I haven't bothered growing nasturtiums. This year I have succumbed again and keep expecting the blackfly back again! Good tip from captainjack, thanks for that.

Ive also got them on my yellow freesias :( I dont think they harm the plants, just dont look very nice. Ive cut some of the freesias to bring in and gave them a shake to get the little beetles off.
