i recently purchased a nokia 5230 on virgin mobile The attraction was free sat nav from ovi maps but now i find when i use it i am charged for internet access on my phone i understand it is only 30p a day but if you are using it all the time it soon mounts up hardly free then would have been might have been cheaper to keep old phone and buy stand alone sat nav i would be interested to read anyone's comments

It's free as in you do not pay for the service or the maps.

Data usage is charged by the network and something else, so in that sence it's not free.

Nokia do say
"Free navigation is for the lifetime of the phone. Downloading of maps over-the-air may involve transferring large amounts of data. Your service provider may charge for the data transmission. "

Have you checked whether they will let you change your contract to include some data allowance?

Yes; unfortunately, they don't tell you about the web access charges! On their £20 tariff over 24 months or £25 tariff over 18 months, you get increased minutes/texts and also unlimited web access subject to a fair use policy of 1Gb/Month. You may be better opting for one of these tariffs and "using" the internet on your phone.

My friend has a Nokia 5800 which I believe is similar to the 5230. He has downloaded the maps to the phone via his pc and turned off data on the phone and it works fine. I understand you only need a data connection for live traffic information etc.

as the prev poster has stated, you can download the entire ovi maps on select nokia phones and save to memory card and then use it without needing to access the net.

see this weeks pc pro magazine which has a write up on the cover page on sat navs and it covers ovi maps too.
