Contribution-based JSA entitlement:

Hi!

I've just relocated therefore ceased working for previous employer and would like to go on contribution-based JSA until I find a new job (I'm not entitled to income-based JSA).

I've read that entitlement is assessed on the basis of past two full tax years of employment.

In the year ending 5th of April 2009 my earnings were within requirements but last year (ending 5th of April 2010) my hours were reduced to 11h and because I'm not sure how is it calculated I don't know whether I'm entitled.

My P60s say:

year ending 5th of April 2009:
at LEL: 3870
above LEL: 267
above earnings threshold + UAP: 654
employee contributions: 71.95

year ending 5th of April 2010:
at LEL: 1615
above LEL: 151
above earnings threshold: 611
above the UAP: 0
employee contributions: 67.30

Would anyone be able to give an estimate, direct me to online calculator (if one exists)?

THX,

The tax years that they will be looking at will be the 2007/8 and 2008/9 tax years.

The reason is that it is too soon for everyones NI records to have been updated yet as the last tax year only ended in April.

Will they check it themselves on the basis of NI or request me to bring p60s?

That's actually good because in 2007/08 I was working 16,5h per week so my LEL levels would look similar to that from year ending 5th of April 2009:
    at LEL: 3870
    above LEL: 267
above earnings threshold + UAP: 654
    employee contributions: 71.95

So going back to my (modified now ;)) question:

If I have two years like the one above would I qualify?

Looking at your P60, i would say you wouldnt qualify, you would have had to have worked over 16.5 hrs to qualify for one of the tax years.

Would you be able to direct me to the source of this 16,5h info?

From your post I assume that one needs to qualify only for one year to get it -or am I wrong and it's both?

There been times when I was working more (either a bit more) or whole day more (before bank holidays) -I understand that it needs to be more than occassional?

So how many in LEL and above LEL should be there to qualify?

PS: do you know whether they ask for p60s or check that themselves on the basis of NIN?

As far as i'm aware its made up of both tax years.
    For 07/08 25xLEL is £2175 50xLEL £4350
    For 08/09 25XLEL is £2250 50xLEL £4500
So for the 1st Contribution condition you have to have earnt at least 25xLEL for one of the years, and the 2nd Contribution Condition you must have earnt 50xLEL for both of the taxyears

    hope this helps

I don't understand last bit of last sentence (I don't mean: hope this helps ;)):

and the 2nd Contribution Condition you must have earnt 50 or 25? => 50 LEL in total or 75 LEL in total?

You wont need to provide P60's in most cases.

The National Insurance Recording System interfaces with the JSA payment system and your earnings should be assessed automatically. If there is any problem they will then request P60.

it means you would have had to have earnt over £4350 in 07/08 and £4500 in 08/09 to qualify.
