I want to buy a second hand car from a dealer, but I haven't driven for years, I wouldn't feel comfortable driving it home on roads i don't know, especially if it involved motorway driving, which i've never properly done.

In an ideal, the car would be delivered, and i can get to grips with everything around my local estate and town, where i know the roads. If they don't deliver, or they ask stupid prices, what are my other options?

Best thing and properly the cheapest both in delivery cost and long term cost would be to book a few hours with a local instructor

    1. Get a family member or friend to drive it.

    2. Pay someone to collect it for you on a wagon.

    3. Just step up and drive the thing home yourself.

Does number 3 include growing some balls? :D

What about insurance, do i have to get insured straight away before i can drive it home?

How could i get a friend or family if they arent insured?

The dealer wont let the car go without Car Tax, so you will need to be insured for him to provide the car tax.

For extra family members to drive, you can take out day insurance, for about £12-14 ishy. It can be found from google.

I agree with the above, insure it fully comp & just drive it home. You could collect first thing in the morning, dinner time even 10mins before closing time, then wait for 30mins to miss the rush hour traffic.

they can get the tax on their own insurance. The last car I bought had no tax and they sorted me out with 6 months worth without me having to show my own insurance documents.

Just drive it home. It's always strange driving a car you haven't driven before for the first time anyway. Also take a long way home if you want to avoid busy roads/motorways. :)

book a driving lesson prior to picking it up...with an instructor in a dual control car ...might boost your confidence to drive it home yourself
    onwards and upwards

I'm not following the logic (as this is my first time, be gentle)

In order to drive away wtih a car, you need to be insured on it.
But surely to be insured on a car, you have to buy it.

So it goes like this... go to the dealer, like the car, hand over the cash, [missing insurance part], drive the car away

It only takes a quick phone call to arrange car insurance. Normaly you would put a deposit down and then pick it up some other day. It gives you plenty of time to arrange the insurance :)
