Hi Folks,
Basically I am web designer/developer looking to get some cash to emigrate to OZ.
What I would like to know where is the best place to advertise?
I have tried gumtree etc but have only got one or two jobs from these sites
Is it ok to post offers and rates here btw?

If you have a good website and strong portfolio then people will follow you0

No offers or rates on here as you can't advertise.
That said, there are sites on the net where you can advertise your services and quote on jobs. Be aware though that you will be competing with 12 year olds in China who can knock out a site in about a week for a tenth of the price you need to charge.
I'm of the opinion that word of mouth is key in web design. If you have a good name, then you will get referrals. If you don't, then you won't. Try doing a few freebies for charities or the like (just look at their sites and see if they need updating, don't wait for them to find you!) and you will find that you get good press from that.0 -

And how do you suppose people will find his website? How's he meant to build up his portfolio if he's having trouble finding customers?
It's not ok to advertise on MSE, nope. Get yourself onto WHT, DigitalPoint, and some of the other freelancing sites. DP and half the freelancing sites are flooded with cheap workers from india, but there are people on there happy to pay for GOOD work as well. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
By self advertising like,
Signature link, forum posting, blog posts etc0 -
So spamming, basically. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

It never hurts to consider real world advertising too - word of mouth is a very powerful business generator - do some good work for some well connected clients and you'll be doing ok. Finding those well connected clients in the first place is the tricky part.
Every week I get dozens of emails from employment agencies offering short term contract work - usually 3-4 months contract - in various parts of the country. What you could look at is doing contract work. Have a look on the jobs websites - most ads are posted there by employment agencies anyway - and look for what skills you have relevent to the marketplace.
As Bingo says above, you could consider building up your portfolio by doing free or low cost websites - maybe for a local charity or community group, or for a family member - then when you have that website online, you can use that as evidence of your work on your own website/blogs. You could also spend time making a template ecom site to show that you know how to do that sort of work.
Finally, you could consider setting up a facebook page to promote your business, and rope in your friends to help you spread the message.0 -

hmm not exactly as you will be banned lol you can buy signature link for rent.0 -
Which was my point. People making forum posts etc purely for the sake of advertising their business are easily spotted, and aren't appreciated anywhere. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

I should mention that I am based in Ireland where nothing is happening in the economy so any short term contracts are out the door hence looking for freelance to get some funds to freelance
Yes I know that people should follow me through my portfolio but I am trying to increase by portfolio.
I am not trying to compete solely on a price basis, what I can provide is a seriously competitive package i.e. website design/development, brand design and hosting for a v competitive price.
The problem atm is sourcing quality clients0 -
How about volunteering for this website? They wanted people who could redesign this website a few days ago. Might boost your reputation.0
