    i'm going to be trying this out too with a couple of small window boxes. I've tried it with shallower trays but found the watering a pain! Agree that the convenience of having the lettuce "just there" is so so so fantastic!
    Also I'm going to do some research into some more hardy salad stuff that I can keep outside into the autumn; I've got a couple of cheapo plastic mini greenhouses, thought I might be able to keep some things going until hard frosts. Or maybe invest in cold frame or cloche for our raised bed.

    I found some seeds yesterday (winter salad leaves) that say on the packet they can be sown indoors during the winter. I think they're Thomson and Morgan. although saying that, I don't see why normal lettuce wouldn't work if it's indoors during the winter. I have a colleague who was just telling me she sows all sorts out of season with varying degrees of success.
