Growing lettuce year round?

I've grown lettuce for the first time this year and I've loved having ready-made salad in my garden. I'm going to really resent having to buy lettuce in the winter after this, so I was wondering if it would successfully grow indoors during the winter in little pots on windowsills?

I bought some seeds a couple of week ago from T&M called 'All Year Round' lettuce. Can be sown anytime. it is currently only taking three days to germinate.0

Ooo thanks, will look out for that. The lettuce seeds I have (lollo rossa and 'mixed leaves') are all for sowing during spring/summer, with the assumption they're being grown outside. But none of them say whether they can be grown indoors year round.0 -
i grow mine in a old mushroom containers on my window sill the whole year. i keep a spare and throw seeds on and just swop them over as one is eaten the other is usually ready to go on the sill

Brill, thanks, this is what I wanted to do. :T
So in theory, I could do this with other veg? Maybe peppers, chillies?0 -
I was wondering the same thing today and now I know the answer :-)
Thanks all xx0 -
not tried either chillies or peppers so cant comment on them but cant see why not. my theory is give it a go and see if it works lolWhen you know better you do better0

Thanks for the replies. I shall give it a go and report back in the winter!0

i'm going to be trying this out too with a couple of small window boxes. I've tried it with shallower trays but found the watering a pain! Agree that the convenience of having the lettuce "just there" is so so so fantastic!
Also I'm going to do some research into some more hardy salad stuff that I can keep outside into the autumn; I've got a couple of cheapo plastic mini greenhouses, thought I might be able to keep some things going until hard frosts. Or maybe invest in cold frame or cloche for our raised bed.0
