Thanks for the excellent help averyone,

I like the fellowes Range they look like they will do the job. Some shred CDs?-not sure I would need that!!

Just depends on what use you have them, I bought the £100 because I needed a one I knew would be reliable and up to the job and it has been.

The £30 one is reliable and up to the job though, assuming as in the original post it's home use. I'd say I'm a fairly heavy user - anything with my name on it gets shredded, and a lot of junk mail that I can't be bothered checking for personal details. I also shred work documents, and the £30 one does fine.

The same for me, but I shred an insane amount of stuff and at the time when I bought the shredder none of the other available ones were capable of CD/DVD destruction, only cards + sheets, so I bought mine for it's heavy use capability, large storage and destruction of media.

It requires 3-in-1 oil to keep it going, but it's robust and hasn't faltered once.

    >I've got a Fellows Shredder (think it's PS-77C off hand)<

Mine is much the same, a Fellowes in the £80-£100 range for my home-office. It zips through CCs and CDs no problem, plus all the invoices and statements I get.

One tip, it's quite simple to override the bin-open interlock meaning you can have the bin pulled out a couple of inches to chuck general rubbish into it and still use for shredding.

Me and safety general don't go well together, so I always have the bin lock enabled. Knowing my luck the shredder will get some extra calories if I try and throw stuff in it :D

Generally, the bit that needs to be shredded forms only a small portion of the page. We tear the relevant portion out of the page and recycle the remainder with the general paper recycle.

The small bit of paper to be shredded is then attacked with a pair of 5-bladed shredding scissors. I'm sure they'll never break down.

It's quite therapeutic, sitting there with some music playing, snipping away........

They won't do CCs or CDs, of course, but how often do you need to shred a Credit Card, and CDs can be rendered useless with one stroke of a Stanley knife across the playing surface (or a piece of sandpaper).

We've got a shredder that cost under £10 and had it for at least 5 years and its fine, just cant put too much in otherwise it wont shred it and the motors will just stop. I only shred whats neccessary eg name and address from letter. Don't see you should have to spend anymore than £50 for 1

Just depends in what you believe in, the model I have has the capability to shred CD's. I tend to destroy them because I don't like keeping them around and I always seem to find crap to destroy when I have a shredder

Quite rightly you could easily get some scissors, but I much prefer feeding the muncher machine to do it for me :)

As stated, at the time I wanted a shredder, argos was only selling the one for £100 that was capable of destroying CD's when I bought mine and I wanted one capable of destroying CD's so I bought that. Nowadays there's more available for cheaper I would just spend the smaller amount.

I'm quite happy spending that much because I know I'll only need to spend it once and it came with a long warranty (thing it was 10yr or a lifetime one) can't remember tbh but I've no doubt it will never break and I had the money to spend so I could afford it and thought why not
