goodbye family credit..forever..Now what?

our forth child left school this summer for uni..and I just rang family credit to inform them of this..so sadly our £100 per week from them will stop from today along with the child allowance{approx £500 per month all told} along with our free prescriptions/dentist/glasses..and we will have to live on £700 per month from our combined part time jobs...both my wife and I work less than 25 hours per week..so with a £400 per month mortgage to start with and nothing in the kitty, its not going be fun..We are both in our 50,s..so its not easy in the job market ..Is their any other help out there until I find a permenant job?

You can always both try evening work to boost your income?

I do feel for you having to face up to that sort of drop in income. I totally blame this present government for encouraging a dependency culture. Surely you can still claim WTC?

I I WAS going to say that we live on £700 a month.

But having read furher, I won't. We DO live on £700 a month. BUT we live in Spain, where the cost of living is much cheaper AND we do not have a mortgage..in fact no housing costs apart frrom the ones everyone has, like rates (80E per year) and water rates(10E per year).

Your situation is no fun in your 50s... I feel for you.

Seriously - I'm sure you can claim Council Tax Benefit. and maybe Working Tax Credits (although I'm not sure about these - someone will come along soon who IS sure).

    Wishing you all the best.

don't forget you get an over 50's bonus on the wtc.
i will miss my benifits in 2 years time when eldest leaves school.
i will have to get some sort of part time job then as hubby only earns £241 a week and at the moment with all the benifits we get an extra £350 a week.
Thats the trouble with benifits they make you dependant on them, so you don't do overtime or anything, i know how you feel, i will sorely miss mine.

Try posting a SOA on the debt-free wannabee boards, they might be able to work out where that other £300 goes.

But on a combined £700 a month and over 50 - you should get WTCs

Seriously? Your husband earns £241 per week and benefits top it up by £350 a week - meaning you have a staggering £591 A WEEK coming in???? £2364 per month, of which £1400 is benefits? Can you please explain further?

£152 ctc, £40 child benifit, £30 housing benifit, £47 carer allowance, plus dla high care for my daughter who has a rare illness and dla low care for me who has the same illness.
  • The OP started this thread for advice, Bonnie was only trying to offer some of that and does not deserve to get ripped into for doing so. I apologise if I've interpreted your post incorrectly but it comes across as being quite nasty to me.
It would be nice to see the thread kept on a positive level, not turned into a witch hunt of those who unfortunately need or are entitled to benefits, for whatever reason.

OP Sorry I cant offer any advice other than whats already been given, but I've thanked you for posting this. It will be interesting to see some of the replies as I will soon be in the same position.
