A letter from you would not be required for her to join the local library. Like opening a bank account, a bank or credit card statement, a drivers licence, passport and the usual proof of ID and address should suffice. Alarm bells should ring if her statements and driving licence do not link her to your address.

I don't think driving licences and bank statements not being linked to your address means anything.

My driving licence and bank statements etc are all still in my parents address even though i moved out about 10 years ago when i started university.

    This is for 2 reasons:

1 - In those 10 years, I have have had 5 different address, so it is much easier not to change addresses each time.

2 - Security, living in shared houses, any of the other tenents have access to your post, therefore it is much safer to get these posted to an address I know is secure. I still spend some weekends, holidays etc at my parents, so i reguarly pick up this post.

I think we are all need to stop being skeptical for no reason

An aversion to having bank/credit card statements, mobile telephone bills, driving licence and electoral registration registered to an occupants address can mean something or nothing.

It can be for the best of motives (frequent changes of address or security issues which you cite) and it can be for the worst of motives (to prevent creditors/debt collectors from tracing them).

There is a high likelihood that the lodger has lied to the landlord. There is a strong possibility that the lodger/landlady relationship will breakdown because the lodger doesn't have stable employment.

At the very least, the landlord has failed to gather basic information on the tenant, hasn't performed any screening/checks and subsequently has realised that she hasn't a clue who is living in her property. That's not the lodgers fault but it is a potential issue because the landlord has unnecessarily exposed themselves to higher risk.

The risks may not be realised but this is a risky set-up nonetheless.

I agree that not having your bank account and driving license linked to an address you are lodging at is not unusual. If I was lodging somewhere for 6 months or so I'd probably use my parents address. However if that is the case with her current bank account and driving license (she told me she had this registered to her previous lodging just before being given notice) then why would you go out of your way to set up a new bank account at somewhere you were lodging? Surely the easy option is to take a recent statement etc. from wherever your current stuff goes to have it set up? Then when you've changed your drivers license to the current address go in and swap the bank address over?

Would a bank really accept a letter signed by a landlord as proof of address? That would make setting up a fake bank account really easy.

Further to using a parents address... my parents currently live about 15 mins drive away. If I was a lodger in the same city I'd probably use their address if I knew it was temporary. However if I lived a hundred miles away I'd have post sent to my own address. My brother has already found out the hard way how much of a pain in the !!! having mail sent to an address you cant get it from straight away is!
