scheming_gypsy wrote:So did i espresso but if the old modem isn't picking up an adsl signal and the wireless router isn't working too clever either ......... although i've just remembered she can't connect to the router and not just the internet.
Here's a question though..
Does the machine have USB2? there 'could' be an issue with a USB2 card running in a USB1 socket.
I don't use a USB modem but I had assumed that the drivers would need to be loaded first, so that it could be configured correctly for the line before the DSL light would come on but I'm not absolutely sure that is the case!choccyface2006_Post_#1 wrote:I have been trying to install my new Netgear DG834G router/modem that I got free with AOL. All was going well, installation went fine, I can connect to the internet with the new router, but WITH the ethernet cable in. Now I want to go wireless, and thats where the problem is. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
i can't remember if it does or doesn't to be honest espresso.. i've not used one for ages.
With the second part i got confused when i saw there was no DSL light on the other modem and went off track.0 -
I'm almost afriad to ask this and don't wish to add to the confusion but is all this because you are upgrading with AOL from ADSL to wireless? I spoke to AOL yesterday and when all was said and done I was refunded an overcharge (watch your billing folks - they tried to get me for a pro-rata charge I had already paid!). They are now also giving me wireless and reducing my monthly charge to £14.99 lifetime (for that, I must thank MSE as "I heard it here first!"
) Anyway, this new wireless router is due to arrive by post shortly and wondering will I will run into the same type problem? 0 -
The windows wizard.
I will try the filter too, see what happens.

I also have bought this same Netgear router thingy. I also can use it wired and have to say that is an improvement on the Pipex modem I was using, haven't been suffering the dropped connections. However I can't make it wireless either. When setting it up it would not allow me the option of no security, any ideas why not? The wireless light is lit up but have no idea how to make it recognise my lappy wirelessly. The lappy is aware of the existence of a wireless network, but cannot access it.any help with this would be wonderful as I also have an older laptop that I wish to use as well.0

Don't understand why you would ever want to set up wireless without security! You may have problems using an older laptop with wireless - what operating system does it use?
Basically you need to enter a good long random passphrase into the router and then when prompted enter the same passphrase into the laptop. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I know it is a daft idea really to have the network without security but i am rather clutching at straws! My son says he has the same router and has a lot more options on his menus than i do. He will hopefully be visiting next week to help this old pensioner technophobe sort it all out. The older laptop connects wirelessly to my brother's netgear network using one of those metal bits that slot into a hole on the side. This laptop connects to his network on it's own with no problems. I am sure his nework is secured.
Ah well I can wait, shall have to! thanks for responding.0 -
I'm pretty sure this Netgear router you're using should have the dsl light on, so long as it is plugged into the phone line.choccyface2006 wrote:The windows wizard.

As far as that light is concerned, it won't matter if you have the wrong username, wrong password, and everything else completely wrong - so long as it is plugged into the mains and into the phone line through a microfilter, you should have the dsl light ON.0 -

But is that the case for the USB modem that was tried again but without the drivers? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I lost track of that one - but I'd forget the USB modem and concentrate on the other. They're all as rubbish as each other compared to a proper router.espresso wrote:But is that the case for the USB modem that was tried again but without the drivers?
Likelihood of the router being DOA is pretty unlikely. I used to work for a company that bought loads of them and I don't think we ever had one arrive dead.0
