Wireless router - help please!!

  • although the OP isn't getting a default gateway so probably getting the default IP rather than one from the router.
Ah yes. I should have said to check the router config with a wired connection. In fact it's easier, when troubleshooting like this, to keep the wired connection and just disable the Local Area Connection in Network Connections when you want to test the wireless connectivity. Saves unplugging and plugging network cables.
  • Right, I am having no luck, even my connection to AOL when I am wired up is poor, sometimes it connects, mostly it doesn't, although during the set up phase it appeared to be working ok.

Restored my laptop back to before I installed new router but now it won't recognise my older BT voyager modem, the two arrows in my system tray that are normally green are red and the DSL light on my modem is unlit. I have tried to reinstall the drivers but they are ok.

I am so cross. I have had to install my new router again and it let me online, like I said though, next I try it may not :(

    Any ideas?

    Sarah
  • Leave your router on 24/7. There's no need to disconnect.

Now that you have a better router, you would be best to forget the old BT voyager USB modem. Your new router connects using Ethernet and does not need any drivers to be installed and Ethernet is a much better way of connecting to the net. Once set up correctly you can simply leave your router powered up and connected 24/7.

The following webpage may be helpful but you should use WPA-PSK when setting up your security and not the less secure WEP as shown.

did you have a cd ( disc with your router)
i recently brought a netgear, router from pc world, to work with my laptpo,

my problem is EXACTLY the same as your having where it wont go wireless, it will work with the cable in, but as soon as you want to go wireless it wont!!!!

i phoned netgear and was on the support line for 1hour 30 minutes, in the end they said " your router dont work mamm, take it back to the store" ( they are american support line) so i took it back to pc world, swapped it and installed the new one exactly the same way i did it last time and it worked straight away,

so i would say send the router back to aol and ask for a new one, xx
  • Yes I did have cd with the router. It seemed to work fine, I think its a problem with my Belkin adaptor though, although my router has been tempremental too.

if the DSL light on the modem is unlit then it isn't sounding like the computer / router / Belkin card. The DSL light picks up the signal from the phone line.
You could have an issue with the phone line orf a microfilter.

I read that to mean the DSL light on the old USB modem, which it would be best to forget and concentrate on getting the new wireless router working which does not need drivers installed for it to work.

Sarah: are you trying to connect using the Windoze wizard or the Belkin software?

  • So did i espresso but if the old modem isn't picking up an adsl signal and the wireless router isn't working too clever either ......... although i've just remembered she can't connect to the router and not just the internet.

    Here's a question though..
Does the machine have USB2? there 'could' be an issue with a USB2 card running in a USB1 socket.
