Aldi fiasco

I bought a grass trimmer from aldi in march - seemed a good deal, didnt have to use it until 2 weeks ago, the protective plasstic guard keeps coming off and the blades are exposed making it dangerous to use. Tried to return it to ALDI today who said that as its after 30 days i have to refer to the manufacturer who would repair or refund - i said no, that i bought it from ALDI so its their responsibility. Anyway to cut a long and tedious tale short,, the manufacturer have told me they wont refund will only repair or replace, as i have no desire to go through the same fiasco again with the same product i wanted a refund. They also said that i have to pay to return the item and only IF THEY DECIDE ITS FAULTY will they refund my postage and send me a replacement.
All in all a bit of a fiasco really, ive shopped in ALDI for years now but am inclined to think that cheap is not always as good a deal as it may appea!! Buyer beware
Any info on my rights in this situation would be most appreciated:)

Remind Aldi again that it's their reponsibility under the Sale of Goods Act to provide a remedy for a faulty product such as this, as your contract is with them, not the manufacturer. If they want it to go back to the manufacturer then let them deal with it, not you. However, I'll doubt that you'll be getting a refund as you have had plenty of time to inspect the item and reject it for a full refund. They (Aldi) are well within their rights to offer a repair or replacement product at this stage.

^Whilst true, it'll be much less hassle and quicker to go to the manufacturer direct. No point in hassling Aldi into doing it for you when you could have it done in half the time by cutting them out

Not if the OP has to go to the trouble and cost of returning the item to the manufacturer.

I agree with Neil - OP contract is with the retailer - you are within the 6 month window, so ask for replacement.

Which would be refunded if it's replaced. I'm just saying, if it's a huge trouble getting Aldi to do it, then...

Of course, if you just have to chat to a manager to get it replaced, then do it that way

Depends on T&Cs of warranty, if it says P&P is to be paid, then no refund, hence why go to Aldi, (as they are responsible under SoGA), and use SoGA and get them to return the item

The OP says that the manufacturer advised they will pay postage if found to be faulty.

Bottom line is never go to the manufacturer during the guarantee period unless it suits you. As others have already said your contract is with Aldi's

spoke to manager and they are adamant that i have to deal with manufacturer at my own cost - this item is dangerous as the protective shield keeps coming off so exposing the cutting blade - im confused as to my rights here - if aldi say they wont refund its like i have nowhere to go!
