Options
my family are taking my recently widowed mum with us on our hols to turkey this year. we assumed it would be a simple case of adding her on our usual annual policy with a small additional premium. i was stunned it would cost another £100. my mum will be 68 when we fly. can someone recommend somewhere to go where i can get insurance for her seperately that do a good rate

thanks

If your Mum is not going to travel again this year or more than one other time she will be better off getting single trip insurance. Tesco will insure her.

I am recommending them as I had to be hospitalised while on holiday last year and my Tesco travel insurance was wonderful. They sent out an English Doctor to accompany me home, we were bumped up to business class and there was transport waiting each step of the way.

Not a recomendation for action, but I've found that if you have a Lloyds Bank "Gold Saver Account" you get FREE world wide travel insurance for upto 31 days and upto 79 years age. Catch ? There is an annual service charge unless you keep £2k balance. But even if you get 3% net that only £60 pa. loss of interest. You get also FREE AA breakdown cover - worth say £35 pa, and c.6.5% discount on holiday bookings and better prices for purchases.

The Travel House have just quoted £46.45 for my 86 year old FIL for 2 weeks in Spain. He is really happy as the best quote he had previously was over £300.
Tel 01792 475144 office hours for a personalised quote, they offered AXA as the insurance company, I was half expecting it to be a company I had never heard of.

They came up as the best price on Money Supermarket at £86 so to get it for almost half was a real bonus. Their website is http://www.travelhouse.co.uk/essentials.php

May I suggest you try https://www.direct-travel.co.uk

If your mother has any pre existing medical problems it would be best to ring them directly on 01903 812345

My husband is 51 and had a slight heart attack 4 years ago. He still has angina and is on medication.
I rang them and told them all of this and they were able to insure him for £13
for a weeks holiday to Spain in Sept.
Within 24 hours I had the policy documentation in my hands.

They use AXA Assistance 24 Hour Emergency Service telephone number.

    Well worth a phone call.

    A very understanding company !

    I wish you well.

We used the money supermarket as recommended by Martin. Got fantastic rates for annual multi-travel, cheaper than single trip with travel agents by miles. Check them out at - https://www.moneysupermarket.com

  • It is necessary for us old farts to quantify the risks to which we are liable to be exposed on holiday. In my own case (65+ with 30+ years of type 1 diabetes), the quoted premiums were in the range of £700 to £1000+ for a six month trip to NZ with my wife.
We always make sure that we have masses of spare time to catch the flights and there are reciprocal arrangements with NHS for serious medical conditions. Therefore the risks generally trend towards those which are insured by normal household insurance, for example loss of baggage.

I would urge you to contact https://www.travelcoverdirect.co.uk
They are a web only company and are superb. I've been with them for some time.
I believe that your mum would pay a little over £50 for an annual policy.
I can't talk highly enough about them.

I think with any company you have to notify them of existing conditions. My wife has a condition for which she receives mediaction, but we just telephoned the number given and were accepted at no increased premium. By all means check travelcovedirect (recommended by Margaret) but I bet that the Money Supermarket one comes out cheaper. Just get quotes, no obligation, and if you save a load of money you can go bunjy-jumping in NZ (if that is allowed on your travel cover !) :rotfl:

I have had a really good quote from:

    https://www.totaltravelinsurance.co.uk

I would give them a call - they were really friendly, polite and got back to me straight away with a quote.

    Highly recommended
