I used to manage a large Oxford St Next and if any query arose involving cash then a till reconciliation was done immediately. This was company policy. But such is the culture of lousy customer service so entrenched in retail banking that 10 days or even 8 weeks somehow sounds reasonable to those that provide it.
Halifax policy was (and probably still is) the same.

    For counter transactions.

For ATM transactions the audit log will show whether anything untoward has happened. From a customer service perspective closing down an ATM for an hour will negatively impact a significantly larger number of customers. On top of that, many ATMs are serviced by a third party so the branch staff don't have access to the cash. Even if they did, it's of no benefit if the cardholder is not a customer of the same bank that operates the ATM as they cannot reconcile an account held at another bank.

Regardless, you are missing the point. The sequence of events described by the OP cannot have occurred. It's either been poorly explained or is a wind-up.

    What Next the fashion company?

Yes and AFAIK the same applies to any major retailer, unless it's a bank of course.
  • The logistics of reconciling an ATM compared to a till in a shop is massive. Not a good comparison.

ATMs do retract cash if it isn't removed quickly enough, say the customer is putting their atm card away too slowly. The transaction should reverse itself within a day or so.
  • They have to reverse the transaction. Same thing happened to me in the past and I complained to them. Don't quit complaining

This happened to me once, The money was back in the account 2 days later and I recieved a letter of apology from the bank. The downside is that if you drawing rate is only 100 pounds a day then you are screwed for the rest of the day, which can be a bit of a !!!!!! at weekends :-)

This is true I asked for £200 once in a pub ATM (yes I know the charge blah blah) anyway it gave me £40, it said money requested £200, money despinsed £40.

My bank only showed £40 had been taking out on my statement. However, when I tried to withdraw from another machine £160 it said, my maximum was £40 for the day, £250 daily withdrawal limit, as it still counted it that I had taken £200 out plus the £1 fee or whatever.

The days before Chip & Pin the cash machine would write the amount withdrawn to the magnetic strip on the card so that the daily limit could not be exceeded if the card was later used in another machine on the same day. Possibly to prevent withdrawing maximum via different cash machine networks on same day. It is possible that this still happens but it instead writes to the chip.
