Debit card Fraud in Majorca

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could help me. I recently returned from Majorca where I paid for some drinks in a club with my debit card. I was in there for a couple of hours and as it was a stag do, somewhat the worse for wear. Anyway, on checking my online bank account, it turns out they put through four payments totalling £4131!

I spoke to my bank and they have advised that although they sympathise, as I used chip and pin, there is nothing they can do. Is this right? I can't believe it. I feel like I've been robbed and can't afford to lose £4k. Who can?!

I wonder if anyone has any advice or can offer help...

How much was each payment for? How much did you think you had paid? Crucially, do you have the receipts??
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • No, I don't have any receipts. obviously I was stupid to fall for this, but I was drunk and you just don't get this kind of thing in England. There were four payments from £250 to £2500. It would almost be impossible to spend that in a bar so clearly something dodgy is going on.

What sort of bar was it?
If it was a strip club sorta thing then its certainly possible to spend that much.

Unfortunately you opted to make debit card transactions whilst too drunk to know what you was doing and now you have to pay for that foolishness. say goodbye to that money and learn from it, you have no chance whatsoever of getting it back. as someone else said all they had to do was put it down as 5 bottles of high priced champagne and in your state you put in your pin number without checking.

Maybe you said "buy everybody a drink..."? A few times.

I had a friend who had been out in London and remembers using his card to order "champagne all round" for him/his mates.... he said it could be anything, even £3000.... I looked online and luckily the bar he was in seems to have been a cheap one, not his usual Hooray Henry type, and bottles of champagne were just about £25 each.

OP, if there are 4 transactions then surely you only entered your pin number once for that transaction and the other 3 have been charged without you actually entering the pin? Unfortunately, I think if the other transactions have been made with the correct pin number (but by someone else) then the bank will just say that you didn't protect your pin number and therefore are liable. Might be worth keeping on at your bank though to see if you can get some of the money back - after all you've nothing to lose.
  • What about if someone saw my pin number? I know I am clutching at straws and it was utterly foolish, but £4 grand?! Yes i will learn from it. It was a strip club, and I know how expensive they are, but the fact remains that I didn't spend all that money. I wasn't buying champagne. I really appreciate all the comments, but does anone know the legal position I am in?

If you are going to tell me how stupid I am, please don't post. Trust me, I know this already!!

    Cheers.

Your legal possition is you have none, you have lost the money.
