    hello bex.
thank you for that....i am probably going to book it as minimum sponsership then pay it myself at least that way if im short a littel i can take it from money raised if you see what i mean. I plan 100% to self fund but it doesnt always work that way...and i dont want all these people sponsering me and me not be able to go cos im a couple hundred short! the charity will still get at least 2500 anyway :D but if i manage to pay all off it at they will receive 3000 pounds plus anything else i can raise :D

that looks like a garbled mess lol
    :rotfl:

I rest my case - put me down for Nil Pounds. I am saving up for my own holiday, I really dont want to pay for anyone elses

oh get off your high horse!! read the post properly. I plan to pay 100% and that was just a thought...did it say anywhere that is what i was actually planning to do...no!...it just said probably...that doesnt mean actually!
and youd be happy for a charity to lose out on 3000 pounds just cos of 1 or 200 pound!
as bex pointed out the people sponsering or going to events wouldnt normally dopnate the money so for the charity it really is a win win situattion!, and if youd read any of my previous post..instead of just looking for the bits you want to pick on you will see that most of the money raised will come from planned events...not straight sponserships...so i will be spending a lot of time and money raisning for charity! these events dont just plan theirselves.

and as i said before i asked how to raise money not would you sponser me...cos i couldnt give a rats !!!! if you will or not...i plan to work for all the money i raise.

so thank you for all the people who have been helpful. and given me some ideas (and encouragement) on how to raise some money for a very worthwhile cause...cancer is something that effects all of us sometime in our life ..be it we suffer from it or have fri9ends or family that do.
so any money raised to give to these charities who do all they can to help prevent or cure this awful disease, is money well spent.

and i look forward to in a year giving my own advice on raising money and encouragement to people who want to step out of there comfort zone and do something worthwhile.

so for clarification...i will self fund...the charity will get 100% of monies raised...but if i had gone the other route then i would be telling you that as well and be proud that i was raising at least 1500 pounds for charity!!

you can raise lots of money for a charity without spending huge amounts of money going abroad and having a great experience .

I helped raise £2000 for a local hopsital by pushing a mini and walking from weymouth to bristol - the costs were minimal and covered by those taking part and whats more it was loads and loads of fun too xx

I've done this walk and regarding the fitness, I'd recommend some heavy step training!

Find somewhere with a lot of steps and use them over and over again.

I used the nearest train station bridge steps and went up and over, down and back up, again and again, many times a week for about 3 months before I left!

Agree with those against "sponsered holidays": we're on a budget and I hate being pressured at work to give money we can't really afford to charities I wouldn't support so that someone can justify doing a "big challenge". If you want to do the walk in memory of your mum, do that and then have a seperate ball to raise money for Cancer Research. You don't need to fly to the other side of the world to raise money for charity. You could even give the thousands of pounds to go to China straight to the charity.

ok it is a tough challenge for me that is why im doing it...it will take me out of my comfort zone, and give me something to push for. i am paying to do this trip from my own pocket...and most of the money raised will be from events and raffles not all from straight sponsership (this will probably come from family only anyway). does it matter how i choose to raise the money, it will be going to a good cause and they wont be getting just 10 quid here or even a couple of hundred...i aim to raise at least 3000 pounds...surely that is agood thing. i will not be pressuring people into sponsering me that is their choice.

most of my friends family etc have said they will come to an event or sponser me as they would never have the guts to do it theirselves...even as just a holiday.

thank you eton rifle for your advice..i was wondering about good ways to get the steps in lol i never thought of railway crossings :) because i am so unfit lol i will give myself ayear to build up the walking so i can take it slowly and not risk injuring myslef :D
  • I have read this thread with great interest, and particularly the bit about losing out on being able to reclaim tax.

Another possible way as a middle ground is to explain to people or even do a form of market research along the following: If you explain you are thinking of doing the "trip of a lifetime/Charity raising and you would like them to consider contributing, but in a way that they prefer. You give them all the details explaining what proportion you would be self-funding completely by yourself out of your savings/wages etc. That way they would have a better idea of how much of their tenner would be going to the Charity and how much to fund the trip. Obviously if the person really was funding the trip totally out of their own money this wouldn't be a problem. I am sure many once they know possibly only half of their tenner was going to the Charity, they would be embarrassed into actually donating a full tenner direct to the Charity. Even though some of these trips are arduous and hard going, they are still an experience and trip of a lifetime for the person involved. If we are all honest I am sure we would have a go ourselves if we know enough people to help sponsor us.
It is like the Chuggers and the company's behind them. They get paid well, but I would rather donate direct so the Charity gets most of it bar a small admin cut out of it.
Now, who out there is going to sponsor me to go to Israel so I can scramble up Masada?;) I got down 20 years ago, and am willing to give it a go going up even though disabled. All monies left over from the trip will definitely go to Charity:T:rotfl:
Trying to keep this light hearted, and hope the subtle reasonings fire home, without detracting from the genuine ones who really do self-fund:D
  • I too am interested in this thread. I've been looking at ways to support a Local hardworking cancer charity and on their website they are looking for volunteers to participate in a Trek.

I would need to pay for my place and then also secure sponsership of 3k.

I thought this was a good way of raising funds , my own efforts of afternoon tea and raffle / tombola might raise a hundred or so but if I can persuade local companies to sponser me the charity could get thousands.

And yes if it was a Trek along Hadrians wall I would have worked as hard to get support.

The benefits for me are improving my fitness and making new freinds whilst giving something back to the local community and I hope to be able to continue to support this charity for years to come.

I really never realised that people would be so cynical or negative.
And why would the charity itself be promoting it and assisting people to fundraise if it wasn't beneficial to them ?

When its Dark look for Stars
  • alot of people i have discovered (and im not talking about anyon on here) who are negative and cynical (my mother is pure example) dont have the motivation to do it theirselves so they have to !!!!! at someone who is trying to do a good thing, granted not all of the money raised goes to the charity as it is used to pay for the trip but if its raising the charities 1000's of pounds then its all good. most of the people who 'wont fund your holiday' and who would 'rather give to the charity direct' wouldnt actually give the money direct to the charity so its is enevitably money they are losing out on. a fiver from 10 is better than nothing at all.
when discussing with the charity my options the girl who works for the charity has actually done a minimum sponsership herself, she paid the 300 to book the trek and the charity paid the rest from sponsership raised, she still managed to contribute 2000 pound to teh charity, something that might not have been possible hjad she not done the challenge.

the people who support you will realise that it is a challenge and if its something completly out of the ordinery for you they will be even more supportive,
one of the people who donated a raffle prize was telling me about his friend, she runs marathons and has done for years, she struggles to raise any funds as people know she runs marathons so she isnt pushing herself to do somethiing more but if he had said he was doing it he probably wouldve raised thousands as he isnt the running type lol.

its all swings and roundabouts some people are happy to support you even tho a percentage pays for the trek as the charity will still receive worthhile funds and others wont so just concentrate on thos that will support and help.
