Hello all.

my crazy cousin and i have decided that we are going to do a great wall of china trek, to raise money for charity.
i have had severaly family members suffer from, recover from and die from cancer so we want to give something back,

It will definatly be a challenge for us both we are both unfit ..we will need to train alot.

anyway we need to raise sposer money..and as much as possible of course, but find just asking people for sponsers doesnt always bring much.
so any other fundraising ideas? something were people dont mind giving money but feel like theyre getting something in return..we dont want to have to spend much money.

im thinking maybe a fete or funday...with cake stalls and raffles etc.

anything else?? any ideas will be greatly appreciated..we will be doing the trek next may! so plently of time to get organised.

thanks in advance

I thik a fete or funday is a great idea :) It's also worth getting in touch with your local newspapers/news stations to see if they are happy to give you some coverage.

Out of interest, are you doing the whole length of the wall? 3750 miles is a hell of a walk if you are!
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Why not walk Hadrian's Wall? You would save a lot of money which could be donated to the charity, people you meet on the walk may well donate money to you. Sponsors would get more local coverage.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I confess to issues with these sort of ideas, as I understand it the participants get a free holiday provided they raise enough money for charity. Personally I would rather save for my own holiday than contribute to someone elses.

That said if someone wants to give me 2 grand to walk the great wall of china I will more than happily donate any money I dont spend to a charity of their choice.

Will you be paying your own expenses? I would imagine a trip to China needs a lot of money upfront for flights, hotels etc.
  • I looked into one of these trips (same destination) for a major charity - if participants raised the minimum sponsorship, 50% of that went to cover their costs, and 50% went to the charity - meaning that the participant got the trip of a lifetime for very little money - just a small registration fee of about £200 came out of the participants pocket for a week long trip - so, effectively their trip was subsidised massively by people's sponsorship.

Thanks for that, it confirms my suspicions. In essence it is a freeby holiday at the expense of suckers who think they are contributing to charity.

2 options. Hand over a tenner to the person seeking sponsorship, and a fiver gets to the charity. Alternative option, send of a cheque for a tenner to the charity concerned.

I fancy a sponsored pub crawl across Ibiza next month in aid of Alcoholics Anonymous, anyone want to sponsor me :D

HMRC do not allow Gift Aid to be claimed by the charity for these sponsored holidays, so they do not get the 20+% back from the taxes you have paid that is donated to them.

I will not donate to such so called fund raising events.

last year my cousin at just 28 was diagnosed with cervical cancer, thankfully it was caught very early and needed little tretment no chemo or anything. but this would only have been possible because of all the great work done by cancer charities such as cancer research. so we want to give something back,

Well done lolly1981 for taking the initiative to do such a great thing.

I wish you the best of luck with your fundraising. :T

I've recently been doing some fundraising for GOSH and did a cake sale at work that raised approximately £550 and a month later I did a raffle that raised £1,030!!! Both events took a lot of hard work and planning (especially the raffle) and I spent about 3 weeks writing and e-mailing companies like Odeon, Vue, Lush as well as local restaurants and theatres to get prizes for the raffle.

Keep your chin up and don't listen to the negative comments on here.

What we are saying is that there is no need to travel all the way to China to fund raise as you have clearly proved!!
