O2 cancelling iPhone 3GS Un-limited Internet

I recently heard a rumour that O2 (and only O2, not Vodafone / Orange) were looking at terminating the un-limited internet services on all iPhone 3GS pay monthly mobile phone contracts, obviously having recently bought an iPhone for this exact reason I was slightly concerned and so popped into my local O2 store for clarification. Low and behold O2 are stopping un-limited internet access as of 1st October 2010 and limiting it to 500MB a month (apparently this equates to 30 minutes a day), I then asked what if I were to go over my allotted 30 minutes a day, a simple reply "you will get charged sir".
My question is - Can O2 change my contract even though I signed up to un-limited internet access? or would this make my contract invalid? Am I able to fight this or even cancel my contract with them without further charges?
Any help, support or guidance would be very much appreciated.

When did you take out the contract?
If it was before 24th June then it will stay unlimited until you upgrade your handset.
The confusion is that customers since 24th June will get unlimited data until 1st October and that it when the new caps start.
Either way, you will not be able to get out of your contract, as it either stays unlimited, or it was in your contract after 24th June that it would be capped.0 -
I think you will find virtually all providers are now capping internet, the 30 minutes is wrong though as checking mine and I have a 10gb limit on my ipad , I am online quite a lot obviously as its a nice new toy, I have had it from day one and now almost a month later I find I have used just over 1800mb on the ipad and 300mb on the iphone, looking back over previous month the m,ost I have used on the phone has been 520mb and believe me 30 mins a day is nothing to me. But in saying this if you have say a HTC phone that can use flash then you can easy go over. As fpr when the cap comes in that depends on your contract as has been stated but PAYG and sim only contracts are instant caps I believ as there is no formal contract. Why not enquire about changing what you get, example when looking at bills I found by averaging minutes etc I could cut my minutes down to 600 with 100 texts and a 10gb data for £30 on sim only.Approach her; adore her. Thank you for the responses so far. When the 24 June is mentioned am I correct in thinking you mean this year (2010) and not last (2009)?
Could I also ask where you got this information from? Both my partner and I (+ a number of family members and friends) have the iPhon 3GS (16G) and will be affected by this internet cap.

Yes, 24th June this year.
o2 press release.
If they had them before 24th June then they won't be affected by it.0 -

It is pretty self explanatory what is for new customers and that existing customers are not affected unless they upgrade or change tariff etc.0 -
