I want some kind of storage jar / machine for change

Ideally looking for something I dump my lose change in every day and it sorts it for me so I can see how much I have.
Any ideas?

You could buy a coin sorter, seen them for around 20-30 quid or in the true spirit of MSE you could save some jars (coffe type ones) and use a seperate one for each denomination.

Really, it would only take seconds to sift through a handful of change on a daily basis before you deposit into the jars.

I think I just saved you 20-30 quid.

How about an empty Horlicks or coffee jar? Or a kilner jar?

I use a 1.5 litre volvic bottle nice wide neck just drop the change from my pocket in it every night. sorting, counting and bagging it takes an hour and I take it to the bank every 12 months and deposit the full bags in to my account I usually get about £90 a year from it and I dont jingle as I walk.
  • Currently using two mugs, getting fed up of them filling up so soon though!

Collect some money bags from your bank and then bank them on monthly basis or whatever suits. That way it stops you collecting too much to count, it gains a bit of interest and the bank won't get too miffed about you depositing too many bags in one go. It does add up quick and is great for a rainy day or to save up for something.

This is probably the one area where I probably don't save. If I have too much change in my pocket it always goes to charity. You can always see those donation boxes whenever you go into a sandwich shop etc.

It's a lot more difficult to continually give money each money to charity on a monthly basis through direct debit than it is to offload a bit of change when the opportunity arises.

I always get rid of coppers and 5ps and then 10ps and 20ps when I'm feeling generous. ;)

I get the feeling that with all the machines you now see in places like ASDA where you put in all your change and they exchange it for notes, that less people give to charity.

Still, each to their own.. ;)

  • Argos have coin sorters that tell you how much you have saved for £19.
I go to Sainsburys and use their change machine. Load in your coins and receive a receipt to exchange at the tills. I get rid of my loose pennies and exchange them for £5 off my shoping bill.
A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist :j

If its like the ones at Asda what percentage does the machine operator at Sainsburys rake off ?
  • Sainsburys take 11p per £1.

Sounds to me like you're giving money away rather than saving it :rotfl: Give Sainsburys a fiver and they hand back £4.45
