Hi, gotta problem with me daughters Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1750)

now bearing in mind I've got the same one without any issues

the problem seems to be the main screen seems to be cutting out quite frequently, I'm at a loss as to why

I tried the laptop last week for the best part of 3 hours (with out any cutting out etc)

now tonight me daughter goes back on the her laptop and it starts cutting again

can there be any setting's that may have been changed or any other explanations as to why the screen keeps cutting out then going back to the log in page

any help/advice would be appreciated, thanks

Check Control panel - power option.

do you have a separate login to your daughter?
IT might be power settings in her user account than yours, how is she useing it any differnet to you, if she is like some teenagers that uses it on a nice soft bed cover it could be overheating. Laptops need air and covering the air holes just makes it worse.

Or like someone said check power settings, she might have set the hibernate after inactive for 1 minute or something.

    Yes exactly!!!

In power settings check hibernate or shutdown option is set when the system is Idle for some time.

Probably overheating, yep. Dells have pretty bad cooling. Two I've had, they've both been little furnaces.

    Thanks for the replies,

checked the power settings last night againest my laptop and the daughters one, they appeared the same

also tried it myself after she went to bed, left it on for about 2 hours, it was fine (on my log in though)

I'm in work at present so will look through her setting on her log in later tonight

the odd thing here is, my laptop (the same make & model) gets used 7 days a week 3-4 hours a night) with no problems/issues
the daughters laptop only gets used every now and then, yet she is having the problem

    thanks again

don't think its this, she can be on facebook and typing away, when it just cuts out, then goes to the log in page

however I will check it later tonight, thanks

I have just started having this problem with my Dell Inspiron since the warmer weather. Its 2 years old and often just shuts down as i assume it is overheating (the back feels very hot!)

Is there anything we can do to sort this?

    Thanks,

EDIT: My Dell seems to cut out if your trying to over power it (e.g. opening up lots of programs etc.) So maybe your daughter is doing too many high powered things at once?

check the windows event log, if it is shutting down/crashing there may be some logs in there! To start it:

    start --> run --> eventvwr

Look in the system log first, then the application log around the time the problem happens.

There is a problem with the HD Sound Drivers on Dell's and HPs which cause the machine to sit at close to 100% CPU usage, this causes the cooling fan to run continually and eventually the machine will hibernate.

I can't remember what vendor the drivers were from but I fixed a similar issue on a friends laptop by diabling the service that continually scanned the Microphone socket for someone plugging in a Microphone.

    This cured the problem immediately.

    Could be the same issue.

This is it overheating. You should be able to throw everything you want at the machine and it'll be stable. This weather doesn't help, but Dells are notoriously bad for overheating. Even sat on a desk with good airflow some of them overheat.

I just bought a laptop cooler. wedge-shaped piece of metal and plastic, couple of fans inside it, powered via usb. I can now even use it on my lap without fear of overheating (or burning my bits :rotfl:).

Hasn't crashed once since I started using it. Rock solid, 10+ days uptime. It'd never get past a day or 2 before.
