Where to live in Leeds

Good advice so far from everyone, the transport situation isn't brilliant in Leeds so driving in from the outer suburbs wouldn't be recommended, Moomin mentioned a 10 minute walk from Regent Street but not that it is up a big hill (Claypit Lane) if you are at the northern end of that road.
If you visit before October to choose somewhere and go to Headingley you'll not get a genuine atmosphere as it changes dramatically at the end of September with the new term, tonight there was the last rush of students leaving as the student rental contracts expired. I agree with RAS about Chapeltown, but you may want to get settled somewhere else first. Oh and avoid Cross Gates - its boring.0
