Tories are certainly getting stuck into our benefits system...

if anyone on benefits has luxuries like a tv then they have too much money and do not need benefits.
no one living solely on benefits should have money to allow them to smoke. i gave up because they were getting too expensive. how can benefit scum afford them?0 -
wonder how much money would be saved it the 'winter fuel allowance' was only paid if you spent a required number of weeks in the UK. how much goes to those living in spain etc who dont need the fuel allowance?'Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded'0

they are doing the right thing all of this is been going on to long and my personal feeling is they have a lot of backing from the working people of the uk:D0

They could also cut back on Motability - why does a disabled person need a new car every three years - the Govt could save a fortune by changing the lease period to 4 years and the claimant would barely notice. They could also stop the abuse where a motability car is given on behalf of a disabled person but is actually mostly driven by a relative and seldom for the disabled person themselves.
I appreciate that the recipient can "upgrade" the car to a better spec at their own cost, but even at fully funded levels, you can get a very good range of cars, usually mid-range, and usually good/popular manufacturers.
I also appreciate that the car lease is usually funded by giving up an element of the disability benefits, but the average worker can't get the same deals that a motability customer can get. Like for like, if, say a benefit claimant can forego their, say £200 per month DLA for a car, that same car on a lease to a non-disabled person would cost probably £250 or more. That's because the Govt are also subsidising the car retailers/manufacturers/financers to offer a better deal. So claimants get it both ways - benefits to pay, AND a cheaper lease as well.
As elsewhere with the benefits system, recipients of benefits can often be in a better financial position than those who work, and that's got to stop.0 -
Bl00dy hell; I would break the wifes legs if it meant we could get a new car for nothing every 4 years!0

How would the Government interfering in the work of a private charity help anything?I also appreciate that the car lease is usually funded by giving up an element of the disability benefits, but the average worker can't get the same deals that a motability customer can get. That's because the Govt are also subsidising the car retailers/manufacturers/financers to offer a better deal.
Motability has received lump sum funding from Government in the past, but its ongoing basis is as a private charity with no direct government funding.0 -

Don't take this the wrong way, but just in case it might ever impact on your chances of landing the job you want, it's 'fewer' in all those instances.
There are employers who would instantly dismiss a job application which confused the two, or favour a different application.
Repeatedly using less when it should be fewer in posts used to irritate NDG, and Gen also registered his annoyance with some posters, so I also made note to check myself before posting, sometimes made the less/few mistake when tired.neverdespairgirl wrote: »"fewer" not "less" please, all of you!neverdespairgirl wrote: »<wince>
could you not take a red pen to the notice and cross out "less" and replace with "fewer"?0 -
I'm just wondering why foreign aid is such a sacred cow that they have ringfenced it? Surely when we have a £160billion defecit per year, the UK must forego giving aid to countries that have their own space programmes (India etc)?0

I think it's guilt.

That's because it's a private charity that makes no profit, and may also subsidize its operations from donations and trust income.
Nope. Ongoing funding for Motability leases comes exclusively from individual's decision to give up their DLA. Where conversions are required, the Government may also make grants via the Mobility Equipment Fund, like DLA this is a benefit to the individual not limited to the Motability scheme.
Motability has received lump sum funding from Government in the past, but its ongoing basis is as a private charity with no direct government funding.
Per the Motability charity annual accounts that I last saw, the vast bulk of their income came from Govt grants (either direct or through other Govt agencies/quangos) - very little was raised through charitable donations from individuals or private firms.
There is no VAT on the cars provided - a Govt subsidy of 17.5% (going up to 20%) which reduces the costs of the car to the finance companies enabling them to offer lower finance charges than they can to the general public for the same car and still make the same, if not more profit, than on cars leased to non Motability customers.
How about scrapping the VAT incentive and scrapping all govt grants (both direct and via other govt agencies/quangos) and then let's see whether the DLA covers the "true" cost of the car lease.0
