I thought I heard on the news recently that the law had been changed so that dealers couldn't tie you into a warranty that stipulated you could only have your car serviced by a main dealer. Anyone else hear that?

We've got a VW Touran that needs servicing shortly and wanted to know whether we can get it serviced at our local friendly, reasonably priced and reliable garage or whether we have to pay over the odds at a dealers instead? Or does it still depend on the specific terms of our individual warranty?

    Thanks for any help. :T

I don't think it's the dealer that would try to tie you into such an agreement, you can go to any say VW dealer anyway, not just the supplier.

It's the official UK importer that will set up the waranty conditions through their network of dealers.

But as said it is largely irelevant as you can go to any suitable garage of your choice. Recent changes as you note have been brought into ensure people realise this.

This next bit is not advice I would suggest to anyone, but our last 3 cars have been bought at a year old with 2 years waranty left on each. All have been back to the local main dealers for waranty work without problem inspite of the fact that I have carried out all the scheduled service work using equivalent spec parts and fluids.
Yes there would be a battle to fight if there was a major engine issue, I realise that but I'm confident enough to stand by my own abilities as they would have to prove it as my fault.
Balanced against the choice of service work not being carried out correctly at the garage, it's my choice.
As said not a suitable approach for most. ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
