Anyone with no credit history, your best bet is at your bank if you have a good relationship, then one of the sub prime cards.
It took me a year after moving to the UK to get credit.

I got declined by Vanquis, Barclaycard Initial AND a Capital One Classic. All the cards I should have, in theory, been accepted for. In a 'shot in the dark' moment I applied for the Capital One Progress (for those that don't know it's one up from the classic) and got accepted.

Anyone of the above credit cards would be a good move applying to to by honest. I'm really happy with my Capitalone card. Barclaycard has a feature that does a 'soft' search (searches your credit report without actually leaving a mark). Just google 'let me choose barclaycard' and capitalone compares all of theirs on the capitalone website (sorry it won't let me post links)

Hope this helps anyway, I could sit and look at loans and credit cards all day!

How long did you leave it between being declined for the Capital one classic and applying (successfully) for the Capital One Progress?

    Only three months!

I was literally like  when I got the card through! No idea why they gave it to me tbh since they'd declined me for the other one.

I've been a good girl with it though:D

I just turned eighteen at the end of February, so I have limited credit history.
I was wondering what credit card is used for building credit, and would be the best choice for a person getting they're first credit card.
    .

Cap One and Vanquis are quite likely to give you a card though with low limits and high interest rates. Don't be put off by either because the aim is to use the card within limit and pay it off completely at the end of each month. Do this consistently and you will getting more preferable card i.e. 0% easier. It is a slow process and may take about a year to get there.

No they arent lenient, you have to be 21 or over, and the annual salary requirements might be out of reach for an 18 year old

Barclaycard generally aren't - well not on the age criteria anyway. My wife wanted a second card and they dont put down the age criteria on those even once you sign on for the online banking section of their site but anyone under 23 is refused. Of course just as she turned 23 they removed the existing customer offer haha.

She wasnt thrilled but generally doesnt like barclaycard either - and you will all but surely be stuck with call centers which is the same for capital one.

    No.

If that's the requirements for the card then that's the requirements.

Stangely, its not the case with all lenders though - take capital one for example. Just look at their card requirements ("best suited for") on their site, and the fall down will come over the scroll. But then go into more detail when you click on the card and then it says "more likely" and "less likely" as the options for approval based on the criteria so i guess its not always set in stone.
