Job Seekers Allowance

A friend of mine is looking for work as her youngest started school in September and she is finding it really difficult to get any term time only jobs and the childcare round here is dire in school holidays. Would she be entitled to Job Seekers allowance? She has only been in the country since January 2009 as she spent 8 years in Spain prior to this (she is british).

As long as she otherwise fits the criteria, her being abroad will not exclude her from means tested JSA.All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -
Tell her to phone 0800 05 66 88 and go through the full new claim process. They will book her an appointment at her job centre and process her claim. She will be advised if she has a valid claim by letter."I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something."0

What is means tested JSA?0 -
What is means tested JSA?
There are two types of JSA:
Contribution based JSA(i.e. she would need to have paid the right amount of NI stamp during a test period, this one is not means tested)
Means tested JSA: Does exactly what it says on the tin.All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -

Does child benefit count towards your national insurance contributions?
If it is means tested does that mean it would be dependant on how much her partner earns?0 -

Yes, but not the same class as counts towards JSA.All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -
I don't know how much her partner earns but I think it is quite a good amount, problem is they have run up lots of debts which is why she wanted to go back to work but she has applied to every local school and retail shops and the nearest supermarket to no avail. I do feel really sorry for her and said I would ask on here but she thinks she won't be entitled because he earns a good salary (no I did not want to ask how much:o)0

Then he really needs to look at reducing the payments to his debts, rather than making the shortfall up with JSA.
Child benefit only covers her for Class 3 NIC's. Class 1 NI is the contribution that would make her eligible for JSA.
If he is working more than 16 hours, they should, however be entitled to CTC/WTC.All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0
