Then he really needs to look at reducing the payments to his debts, rather than making the shortfall up with JSA.

Child benefit only covers her for Class 3 NIC's. Class 1 NI is the contribution that would make her eligible for JSA.

If he is working more than 16 hours, they should, however be entitled to CTC/WTC.

I think they are on payment plans already:( but I will pass the info on and get her to ring them to check. She doesn't "want" to claim benefits but she cannot get a job:(. Thanks:)

Debts aren't taken into account for JSA.

I am sure she would have realised this. It definately pays to be on benefits and not paying into society in this country if she was in a council house on benefits they would be fine but as it is the impression I get is that if she doesn't find a job they will lose their home:(

It rarely pays to be on benefits. Even if you are talking purely from a financial sense - it's beneficial for most families to work, especially since the introduction of WTC.

If they lose their home, then they will be homeless and qualify for housing assistance anyway.
All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.

That's not quite what I meant.

You implied that she'd be better off if she was in a council house.
I responded by suggesting, if ever she was in need of one (like the people in council houses were when they secured one), then she'll also be eligible for housing assistance.

Unless she has paid sufficient british taxes herself (last 2 complete tax years?) she could only claim means tested JSA. Means tested would only apply if her husband was earning the same as NMW for 24 hours per week.

Thank you:), no she won't have paid any taxes for the past 2 years. Its a shame it doesn't get calculated on taxes you have paid into this country from the start of your working life as she is british and worked for years in the UK before moving abroad. I gave her the number this morning and told her to ring and get some advice:)
