Freeview - jittery signal

Options
Recently bought a TV card with freeview for my PC and am getting jittery signals, with the picture pausing for a second every 10 seconds or so. Tried another USB one that I borrowed and same problem.

I had OnDigital and TopUp TV before and there was never any problem with signal. That was through a set top box

I already have a booster which I got ages ago, so maybe its not doing its job properly anymore.

Worth buying a new one with the highest gain possible do you think. Anyone recommend one that has done the job for them?

Thanks

if its recently bought and setup then maybe there is a clash with other applicants in your system.

make sure you place the dvbT pci card as far away from you graphics card.

maybe the player that your using that came with your pci card might need a re-jig(play around with the audio video settings in menu) see if this sorts the problem out

If you've got a poor signal, often boosters just 'boost' the signal noise along with the bone fide signal. I'd look at your antenna position, and indeed your antenna itself. Check connections at either end. If it worked before, something's changed, normally corroded contacts at antenna end.

  • Signal amd Quality on TV card are both around 77-78% - this sounds good but that is on one of the worst channels where the interfernce makes it almost unwatchable

what channel(s) does it happen on?
  • What sort of aerial have you got? (Indoor/outdoor?)

Is the problem on all channels or just some?

Have you still got the Freeview set top boxes? If so try them with the same aerial.

Try taking the booster out. Disconnect it completely, Don't just switch off or disconnect the power. As Zahc implied they can make reception worse in some circumstances.

I took the booster out - seems to make it worse. Didnt compare signal strength but there appears to make it worse.

Signal breakup appears on all channels - with varying results. If I'm lucky it is watchable, at worst it breaks up every few seconds. No channel is really consistent - you can watch a programme OK, and then a bit later the reception is awful.

I havn't got my old freeview box anymore so I cant test if the problem is the same

Does the PC have a high enough spec for the TV card?

  • Yeah it asks for

    600MHZ - I got 2800
    128 Ram - I got 1024
    8MB Graphics - I got 256

    So more than enough power

May just just cut my losses ans stick it on eBay (where I got it from a few days ago)

Would prefer to get it working though

  • Are there trees between your aerial and the trransmitter? If these have grown since you had your OnDigital box they may now be partially blocking the signal. Trees will also block the signal more when the leaves are wet during / after rain. This might explain what you're seeing.

It could also be interference from electrical equipment in your or a neighbour's house. Replacing the cable with a high quality one (CT100) might help in that case..

New coaxial is usually the first thing I would try, the crap ones from B&Q etc are just not upto the job.
