Possible warranty problem

I bought a brand new Belling double oven cooker last year (September) when I had a new kitchen fitted. However, I did not ring the number on the instruction booklet to activate the warranty. Today the cooker blew and has stopped working. It's tripped the switch in the fuse box, and even on untripping the switch, made a bang noise and stopped working again. Clearly something electrical, and we have a friend, who is also an electrician, looking at it tomorrow. If he can't fix it can I still claim under the warranty, even though I didn't activate it originally?

Thanks.

  • For the first 12 months the you need to contact the retailer.

    Speak to them first.

As long as you have the receipt for the purchase you are okay.

It is a good idea to contact the supplier first as it is them you have the contract with. However, after the first 6 months, the onus is on the customer to prove the fault is inherent (which can be obtained by way of commissioning a report to find if the fault is inherent or caused by misuse/wear n tear).

The retailer may not require this report though, so only go ahead with this if they are refusing to budge.

In the first instance, if it is cheaper and not of significant inconvenience to the customer, they will usually attempt a repair. If this is not possible (or too costly/inconvenient) they will usually replace on a like for like basis.

They may offer a refund straight away but be aware this can take into account any use you have had of the item.

You dont actually need the receipt. All you need is proof of purchase (which can even be a bank statement) :)

Of course if you bought more than one thing at the same time, this can cause problems as the amounts will differ.

That's not going to happen with a reputable company they will either repair or replace. No need to register the purchase at all as others have said.

Which is why i said immediately after the paragraph you've quoted "The retailer may not require this report though, so only go ahead with this if they are refusing to budge."

You are over complicating your advice though.

Absolutely ! You will almost certainly have had the standard 12 month "guarantee" from the retailer - he has taken on that responsibility and should deal with the problem.

If you go in and start spouting off about "engineers reports" and SoGA, all you will do is get right up his nose.

I would say only overly complicated if you're thick.

But then if you were that thick, you'd have trouble turning on a pc, never mind being smart enough to come across MSE ;)

Also depends on your idea of reputable also. A lot of people would say Comet/Currys were reputable yet from my short time on here, i've been given the impression they are a nightmare.
