netgear modem issues

Options
Hi,

I hope someone can help me. I have got a netgear DGN200 modem, which is wireless. however I need to be hard wired to it for work, due to security. I rang BT this afternoon and they were great, sorted out all my laptop settings, my daughter and hubby could still get online. great i thought. but no:(

I get a message saying that I am connected to the internet, but when I try to get online, no webpage will come. I get internet explorer cannot display webpage. I rang BT back and they said all settings were correct for the local area connection. Lady said I must need to disable the VPN on my modem.

I have found a forum, tried their ideas but nothing. I am at a loss, I need to get this sorted out, as my employers have made it quite clear that if I try and do a shift wireless, I am in breach of my contract.

I am desperate, can anyone help me?

thanks

Firstly, if you aren't able to fix it immediately and are forced to do a shift or two via wireless to your router, there is in practice no way that they will be able to prove that you did. Simply don't mention it or deny it if they suggest you did.

Obviously you've connected via an ethernet cable to the router. Assuming you're running a version of Windows, did you use the "New connection wizard" (Control Panel, Network Connections) to set it up?

Did you then go into Network Connections, right click the old wireless connection and choose "Disable"?

If you open a Command Prompt and type in "ipconfig", what do you get back on the screen?

    I wouldn't say that fwor.

Depending on the tools the OP is required to use for work, it could be checking what network interfaces are active and reporting back.

It's very possible for them to know whether the OP is using wireless or wired.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Fair comment. If it's just a browser-based application it probably wouldn't know the difference, but a custom application could be set to check I guess.

Even then, if the OP insisted that they believed that it was connected via the wired connection, I doubt much harm could come of it, but you're right to err on the side of caution if there's potentially someone's job at risk.

Anyway, plenty of things to try yet before giving up on the problem...

I have just spent a wasted phone call with Netgear. Said its not there problem its down to my internet provider or even my laptop. The guy said that maybe settings are not correct, but BT went through everything with me on the phone yesterday.

Netgear would not help me or tell me how to disable the VPN (not surprised really).

Ethernet cable is new, so no issues there.

I am at a loss really. dont know what to do. maybe I need a bt broadband installation disc or something! dont know, just clutching at straws I guess lol.

thanks to everyone who has replied so far, its appreciated

New cables can be broken. Try your laptop in place of a known working machine, just to rule out the cable.

When plugged in via ethernet, are you assigned an IP address via DHCP by the router?

    you should get 192.168.*.*

Can you access webpages by IP? http://66.102.9.105 should take you to google. If you can access it via IP but not https://www.google.co.uk then it's a DNS problem.

    Can you ping 66.102.9.105 ?

    windows + r
    cmd
    enter
    ping 66.102.9.105

Ok, what IP address are you assigned when you connect via a *known working* cable?

    win+r
    cmd
    ipconfig
