Hi, I have two dogs and have recently moved to a house where the back garden is completely patioed (ornamental paving slabs).

I have noticed that washing the slabs with a yard deoderiser is not getting rid of the smell of urine.
It is worse after it rains, I believe this is because uric acid crystals in urine reconstitute in moisture.

Any suggestions on best solution to use to break down these crystals permanently and where to buy..............?

I am loathed to revert to regular use of Jeyes fluid as a friend has advised me this is toxic to animals.
Also been advised that biological washing powder would kill the smell but again my concern would be for the welfare of my dogs re toxicity.

Any help gratefully received as I would really like to be rid of the smell in time to use the garden during the Summer.
Thanks
Fi x

I used to use Odogene in kennels and that worked.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

We tried absolutely everything - jeyes fluid, bleach, bio, industrial cleaner the lot. Unfortunately if your dogs are using this on a daily basis, whilst you have the dogs you will not be able to get rid of the smell as they are constanly topping it up, and the urine seeps down into the substance that the slabs are bedded on.

Since we lost our dogs a few weeks ago, we washed down with Jeyes fluid, followed by bleach. I then weedkilled and miraculously even on really hot days there is no smell.

I really do not think that you will get rid of the smell entirely whilst you still have the dogs, although if anyone has found a miraculous product then please name it.

Are you saying that dogs shouldn't use the garden as a toilet? Not at all?

When I lived in a house with a garden my then dog did not....use the garden as a toilet. You can train the dog not to use the garden as a loo in the same way you train it not to use the house/flat as a loo...

    Anything strange with that?

But of course - you have to put time and effort in walking the dog/dogs at regular intervals....

Simple really....and no smell.. in the garden....

What happens if one day you are i'll and cannot get out to walk the dogs? What happens if the dog cannot be walked because of the dog having surgery etc? If you train them not to use a garden then how would that work?

You end up with an embarrassed/bewildered dog who believes he has had an accident, wherever he ends up going he will think he is doing wrong. Unnecessarily confusing for a dog if you ask me...

And why would you encourage your dog to wee and defecate in areas where other people walk etc if you are not prepared to deal with this in your own garden? Even clearing up after your dog when it is being walked does not remove the mess 100% from areas frequented by others.

Thats what I was thinking. The poor things in their own mind cannot go a toilet in their own back yard or not in their own home (obviously) but only whilst out on a walk? Anything could prevent you from taking your dog out. Also say if you had a party or barbecue in the garden what is the poor dog supposed to do if he/she cannot use the garden as a toilet?
