I have recently (7 weeks ago) moved. I have the final bill from old place which is rather high but i can't prove otherwise, I've also just received first bills for new place. money really tight at mo and I'm worried i'm just gonna get further in debt. Old place i was with scottish power on a triple meter so i couldn't switch. here its scottish hydro electric and southern.

What are my rights re paying the bill for the old place? no way i can afford to pay it off in one go, i had trouble getting hold of scottish powers correct dept to sort out final bill. unfortunately this means now in hands of debt recovery company. what can i negotiate with them?

Re new bills according to uswitch i'd be much better off elsewhere but as a debt has already been incurred by my energy usage thus far, i wanna know if i can transfer the debt to new supplier and if so can i negotiate a lowish direct debit with the new supplier?

i really have no idea how all this works!! someone please help??

seems like a dire situation. there is a hardship payment method i think it is somewhere on this board on how to pay bills if youre struggling.

however you i think need to start cost cutting atleast temporary until things get back on track.

cancel everything that wont cost you too much to do. like your phone contract, internet, tv licence, landline, etc

If you are having problems now then you going to get even bigger problems in Winter. You already proven your having difficulties in old place and now in new the same. The only way of sorting this out is sorting your income your consumption or cutting back on other things

If you get into further debt then your provider may install a pre payment meter

Your rights are you owe money you pay

You dont pay and you wont be able to switch and you get a pre payment meter or a bad credit rating

    Are you for real?

To those who have suggested I am trying to avoid paying my debts -

    • Please be nice to all MoneySavers : There's no such thing as a stupid question and, even if you disagree, courtesy helps.

    • Please be sensitive : This may be a web forum, but you’re still talking to other human beings. Repeatedly or harshly saying someone’s wrong, especially on boards like DebtFreeWannabe, Bankruptcy or Benefits, can lead to upset.

We’re proud that many people whose financial problems exacerbate mental health issues (which applies to me and is partly reason I couldn't be present to take final readings at old flat) seek help in the forum, but this means you may be berating someone who’s clinically depressed. Please think twice before posting judgmental comments.

    • Don't feed the trolls : Sadly the web has a habit of throwing up a very small but vocal number of trolls, people who are nasty or contrary just to get a rise out of you. If someone’s doing this, simply don’t reply, just report it to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com. If you get involved and fling mud back, you risk being barred from using the forum too.
Thanks to those of you who genuinely tried to advised and help me.

I have no intention of avoiding paying my debts. My budget is already as tight as it can get, I don't smoke drink or gamble, I have cheapest internet that I can get as I am agoraphobic amongst other things and so rely on the internet a great deal.

I don't have pay tv or any other luxuries.

I'm simply another person struggling to get by as I'm sure many of you are. So please be more considerate in the replies. I was simply asking if it was possible to switch by taking the debt over to a new supplier and paying it off through them, but paying it off while avoiding incurring further debt by being with a cheaper supplier.

I also do not have a contract phone or landline, just a cheap pay as u go set up. I wouldn't consider not paying my tv licence as the fine would be much worse and i'd be breaking the law.

i just wanted to add something,

i got some nasty replies to the question i asked, & i'm sorry that their reply was nasty.

i myself, have been having a hard time paying my electric bill - £400 & it has been a struggle.

I always thought that with debt collection agencies, that the amount you offered to pay, is normally the amount they are willing to accept.
They ask a few questions about income & circumstances & most of the time they accept it, as long as you do not default from the payment arrangement, all should be well.

on the other hand, do not let them bully you into make a payment that you know you are unable to afford, these companies are trained to get the money they are own from you, some are sympathic others, are not

i hope this is helpful, good luck :-) & even if you did smoke, drink, gamble - so what? we all have to live!!!

Uhm, you have not paid your previous supplier, you have accrued a debt with your current supplier after only seven weeks and you want to run away to yet another supplier. Un
believable. Almost as unbelievable as disappearing ink.

Try reading your meters and budgeting for what you are using. If you are using too much use less or spend less on other rubbish. It is as simple as Newtonian rocket science.

Unfortunately mugs who are (mostly) as poor as you will be paying the interest for your debt. You can repay your original supplier interest free.

Rather than looking for a new supplier why not make sure you are on the cheapest tariff with your current supplier - that will give you extra leeway to pay. You could also ask your supermarket to give you some food on credit that you will pay for later.
