Can anyone please help me?
My PC didnt power on when I tried to switch it on , so I fiddled around with the power cable and the on/off switch and it powered on. Second time I had to do the same. Now the 3rd time it will not power on whatever I do, although the lights on the keyboard and the mouse comes on.

Do you get nothing on the display? That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Have you tried a different power cable? Could either be that or the PSU0

Could be more than that really. It could be a broken power button. Or a dead motherboard. Power is getting to it (hence mouse and KB lights) so I wouldn't say it was the cable. The most likely bet is the power supply. I just hope it didn't kill anything else when it died if that's the case. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

Inside the tower/desktop case, behind where the power cable plugs in there is a unit that distributes power to the various components inside the computer. This is known - naturally - as the power supply unit or PSU. These fail from time to time and their failure manifests itself in a variety of ways.
Working out what is going on needs some precise answers. You describe your computer as not powering on. What does this mean? For example, does the computer remain completely silent (i.e. no fans running, no lights showing) or is it simply that you have no picture on the monitor? I see that you say that the lights on the keyboard and mouse are showing but what else is happening if at all?My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

There is a diagnostic process, it varies from 2 or 3 elements to a whole ' war & peace length ' series of things to do. As weegie.geek & HO87 say more info is needed to even begin the process.
- have you very recently changed / added / removed any hardware or software or fiddled with internal cables / jumpers etc ?
- I assume the HDD / fans / spin up in addition to the keyboard light, but the puter does not boot, is that correct?
- when you press the start button do you get any video ? / the monitor displays the black & white BIOS screen / does it ?
- or are you saying that nothing / absolute zilch happens / no video / no fans spinning / does it ?
Your starting point is to short out the CMOS and go from there. To do that the group need to know your exact motherboard model & type, if clearing the CMOS gives no positive solution the PSU is always the next predictable culprit.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Sounds like the PSU to me, 10 pounds on ebay, 10 minutes to fit it. Job done0

...well depending on how old/expensive the PC was and how willing OP is to risk blowing the thing up with a 'cheap' PSU they might consider upping their budget a little for a good quality one....
....but yes that would probably make it work0
