Reference for ex-employee

Posts: 146 Forumite
Dilemma........ ex employee of almost a year left 4 months ago, giving 24hrs notice despite contract stating 1 month required.
Glad she went to be honest, too much changing shift, time off, finish early etc. Since her departure I`ve found out she`s been bad mouthing me, claiming underpaid wages, refusing her time off and other various nonsense.
Her family and surrounding neighbours now ignore me in the street, confused...
Gave her a glowing reference to get a house for her and small child...before she left obviously.
Have now received reference request from national multi million pound organisation that she left to go to.
Do I ignore it? Or give a true and honest reference?
Been taken for a mug once too often.
Can I suggest they ask her other previous employers? (Who she also left on bad terms)

Is this the one that almost took you to an ET ? Or have I got it confused with someone else?
If you don't feel comfortable in giving a true reference then I don't think I could give one and would ignore it.2014 Target;

Check if you can but send a letter to the company stating you refuse to provide a referance for the candidate.The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!0 -
All you need do is tell them when her employment started and when it finished and what her job title was. End of..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

If you do, ensure it is true & honest. i.e. relates to facts.
Any opinions may leave you open to litigation, especially if those opinions portray the person in a negative manner.
Any negative comments will probably reflect more about you to the company requesting the reference, than the person they are aimed at.Can I suggest they ask her other previous employers? (Who she also left on bad terms)
One wonders why you employed such a person in the first place if you knew she left the previous employers on bad terms."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20101 -
Can you not simply write that you decline their invitation to provide a reference? Damming, yet truthful.From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -

On the information given, I would go for this option. Silence implies that you are a lazy employer, a written refusal to provide a reference speaks volumes (but creates no potential liability for falsehoods).Gone ... or have I?0 -

Dear <reference seeker>
I acknowledge your request for a reference on <former employee> and I am rather surprised that she should offer my name as a referee. <former employee> worked here from <start date> giving notice on <notice date> of leaving on <finish date>. Beyond this information I have nothing to say in favour of <former employee>'s application for employment with yourselves.
Yours sincerely
<referee>
