It all depends on how both the sending and receiving banks handle faster payments. As far as I can tell, each bank has it's own rules and procedures, which include:

    1. the time of day the payment is sent. Some banks appear to be able to deal with them outside of normal working or banking hours, other don't.

    2. the time of day the payment is received - see above.

    3. the amount of money you're sending

    4. how fast the banks at both ends of the transaction actually deal with the payment

    For example:
    • If I FP money from HSBC to nationwide, it takes at least couple of hours, even if I do it during the working day. If I do it at the weekend, it won't go in until 9am on the Monday morning.
    • If I FP from my Nationwide to HSBC, it's there almost instantaneously. But not always...
    • When my husband transfers money from the business to our household account (both HSBC), it's always immediate.
I've come to the conclusion that it will get there when it gets there. HSBC appears to have both the fast sending AND the fast receiving parts of the process in place (most of the time).

The problem with FP and Nationwide was why I stopped using NW for my everyday banking in the first place, despite being otherwise very happy with the account.

Apologies to OP for giving you an 'it depends' answer!

    How interesting, not.

Did you happen to read the thread title and OP and the rest ?

Or did you just jump in talking crap ?
  • Ive just sent a FP from my Halifax reward account to my Natwest account and it was there within seconds.

I have never had a problem with a FP from Halifax and are usually there no longer than 5 minutes later and to various banks like Lloyds(dads bank), Santander(otherhalfs bank), Yorkshire Bank (friends bank) or Natwest (Mine)

I've been unable to send a faster payment since Thursday. Halifax online keeps insisting it can only be sent by BACS. I've tried varying amounts and to several existing payees but to no avail. I've just called the ever helpful call centre only to be told there is no problem, it's a random security measure to disallow customers to use the system. In fact the bright spark I spoke to suggested there may be a limit as to the number of payments a customer could make and I had exceeded it - that is completely inaccurate and when I told her so she responded with threatening to terminate the call as I was "undermining her authority".

They can't tell me if or when I will have my functionality restored and can't see why I'm not at all happy. What a useless bunch.

You would be more helpful if you would admit disregarding every other post.

It will have arrived in seconds - but obviously took a while for HBOS to update your account.
