Faulty play station 3 out of warranty by 3 weeks what can i do ?

I purchased a PS3 for my son in may 2009, Now it has developed a fault and is not working.
The shop I purchased it from said nothing can be done as its out of its one year warranty ( just 3 weeks out :( ) and Sony want £150 to repair the fault.
Is there anything I can do ?

A above quote the sale of goods act, here are the basic facts. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html

If they refuse come back on here and well tell you the rest, hopefully the mention of it will be enough.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • Thanks :)
I rang the shop up at 7pm today they said "We only give one years warranty from the date of purchase, you should have took out the extended warranty in store. We would be happy to arrange a repair via Sony for you at your own expense".
I quoted the wording via link that was given and they are ringing me back tomorrow morning as the manager is not available ,fingers crossed:)
I will keep you all posted on what happens.

  • Manager didn't ring me back, so I rang back once more. I got fobbed off with the manager is busy he will ring you back within the hour, 4 hours later I had to ring them once more.
They said it has to go to Sony for the repair but now its £99 + P&P, I cant have a exchange or refund. Have to wait till Monday now for any more information.

Numerous cases on here for you to follow.

Basically if they won't budge then you need to pay for an independent report and if this implies the fault is due to an 'inherent fault' (ie. due to design or manufacture when it was new) you can present this to the Small Claims Court. If they judge in your favour (they should if the report is satisfactory) then you'll get all costs back and either a free repair or refund (either full if you're lucky or partial if it accounts for your use so far). Your claim is always with the retailer.

The warrenty is over and therefore in my opinion there liability to you - so I dont understand why they should pay for a repair for you. I have a 3yr alarm clock that broke, do you think they would repair it for me :/

They should pay if there is an inherent fault with the product, this is however down to the OP to prove that there was and that is is not working due to misuse or wear and tear.

The person that got a refund 11 months after the warranty was either lucky or dealing with someone that didn't understand SOGA
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

Keeping in mind this is the most expensive console on the market and not a £9.99 alarm clock from a catalogue shop (Which has lasted you 3 years which my console has only lasted 13 months) I bought this console for a lot of money and spent a lot on games and movies.
Its a common fault which sony know will happen they should not bring out an inferior product with problems.
However on the other hand thanx to all the genuine posters on this site you have helped me loads.
