Hi All

I am absolutely desperate to go back to college. I am 23, a mum and I work full-time. I have had 3 years of hell and suffer with Hemiplegic Migraine which pretty much take over my life at the moment due to my job. Basically, I love to learn and have always wanted to study Criminology and Psychology.

My head needs a break for a year or so from the stress of working life and I have managed to get my hubby to agreed to me going to college if I can get the same in benefits as I would get if I was working (about £950).

Does anybody know what is available to me? Hubby earns £600 per month and we have a 3 year old.

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

K x

p.s. we have also just been made bankrupt if this has any impact?

You want to quit your your job and study to "give your head a break".

You want to get £950 a month off the state to do it?

    Can you clarify your question?

    Thanks

I started an NVQ2 when I finished school but had to leave so that I could work. We currently receive Working TC and Child TC, and yes it would be a full time course. I guess I would need to do an access course first. I don't know how study works i'm afraid. This is the first time I have really looked in to it :/

bankrupt at 23 and wants to give up work to do something that you want to do with the goverment giving you benfits to equal your wage when your husband is earning just £600 per month and you both have a 3 year old child to support.

You have 40+ more years to work and instead of resting your head maybe start looking for another job, you can study as a hobby in your free time.

Have you taken any action to make your work life less stressful?

Or taken advice on copeing with stress?

Yes, I have been on stress management courses. Maybe I should mention I am also bipolar (hence the bankruptcy) and yet I have worked my entire life (since I was 13) all bar 4 months when my daughter was a baby. Studying, working, and being a mum will only make my problem worse. Hemiplegic migraines are horrendous for anybody who does not know, they are one of the most debilitating forms of migraine that there is (Half of my brain shuts down and it is almost like I have had a stroke, I lose, speach, hearing, movement). I have struggled with these for 3 years, they come in clusters and happen every 3-4 weeks. I will often have 6 or 7 in one cluster (1-2 weeks). Please do not judge me. My husband is a carpenter, there is no work and yes, he has applied to Sainsbury's, B&Q, Blockbuster, everywhere but nothing so £600 is what we have to live with at the moment. So yes, I need to 'give my head a break'. I need to retrain. I need to have a life.

They would then have to pay a sum each month to their creditors (an IPA) if he earns more.

OP have you really thought about the course you want to do? Criminology is usually available to people already in that type of work and requires 3 + a levels to enter. Its a long course too and very heavy going.

If your going to long term better yourself, then hubby should be supporting you, not expecting you/ the state to magic up the difference.
When my mum wanted to do a course, my Father did extra hours to support her through this. Long term he benefitted from her higher wage....for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer.....
The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter :(

Take no notice of some of the people on here you do not need to justify yourself. Your post was quite reasonable. At least you are trying to better yourself not expecting benefits so that you can lie around all day doing nothing like some of them! I dont know the answer, but hopefully someone nice will come along and advise you. Good Luck.
