I have a Sky+ box around 3 years old and suddenly it flashed up a SKY+ error message on the screen.

It said: A SKY+ error has occurred, press select to restart or backup to continue without Sky+ functionality.

I pressed select and then the box just went into standby. I eventually managed to get it to come on by pressing lots of buttons but all I can now do is use it like a Sky standard box, ie I can't record. I dare not turn it off again in case it won't come back on.

I don't want to pay for an engineer to come out for an old box. Has anyone any idea what to do?

Ring Sky and they will take you through the procedure to do a rebuild, you might lose all your recordings though.

I'm assuming your subscription is up to date and its not complaining of not having a valid smart card.

BTW If you are feeling brave most problems are sorted by unplugging the box from the mains, waiting 5 minutes and then plugging in again.
Wait a few minutes while the box downloads the EPG, then bring it out of standby.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    Try this;

    Get the remote & press-
    Services
    4
    0
    1
    Select

That should take you into the engineer menu (Installer Set Up)

Go to 'New Install' & follow the instructions.
If it's a Thompson box, then it's likely the power unit is failing.

If all this fails an engineer will cost you around £65, he would simply swap out the box.

Or Sky HD+ can be got as a free upgrade if you install its yourself, and agree to the HD pack for 12 months @£10/month.

I have tried that but the '0' doesn't register, so can't do it. And yes it is a Thompson box. I can still watch Sky but can't set reminders or record.

I unplugged the box and left it overnight. Didn't help and then it took a lot of pressing buttons to get it out of standby and back on.

    Try this.
Remove the smartcard & wipe it with a clean lint free cloth then put it back in.

Turn off the power to the box.Press & hold the back up button on the front while still holding back up.Keep holding it until the traffic lights on the front of the box light up.
After about 10 minutes, the lights & the message on TV will go out.Wait about a minute & turn it back on.
    That should sort it.

Dont know if this will help. my sky+ had the same fault.
After 7 hours of rebooting and doing what the other posters have said
Mine just came back on its own!! Just watching normal tv and my son said " sky is recording" and indeed it was. And i did not lose my recordings from the reboot (twice), this may not work for you but you never know

I'll try that later tonight - there are a couple of programmes I want to watch tonight and I am scared I won't get it back on.

If you've been with them for 3 years i'd call up sky choose the "thinking of leaving us" option to see about getting a new box
