So the fax dosn't come through if I was already on the phone? Or does it "hold" till I hang up?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Good god, fax machines - are they sold in antiques shops
Windows - the earlier versions, anyway - used to have some reasonable fax software built into the operating system if you're not going to use it much and you still have a dial up modem in your computer.
Another option avoiding the need for the machine altogether is to use an online fax service which gives you a virtual fax number for in and outbound and emails the fax to you - something like fax.co.uk0 -

OK thanks, just a few more questions... How long has the "clever" fax tech been around in the era of fax machines? Was it from the start, or the towards the end? I own a fax machine from 2001 and was wondering if it had the retry system, again, I've lost the manual and nothing obvious is on the buttons.
2) Does the guy that tried to send me the fax still get charged if the dialed engaged? How would the person trying to send the fax know that the sending of the fax failed? Or does it not send it at all?
Thanks!0 -
Think of a fax as a phone call, if the fax machine hits the engaged tone no charge is raised, and their machine would not send it.0

Try searching in Google for the brand name and model of the fax machine/going to the brand website and click e.g. "support" then put the model number in. You may be able to download the manual.
The sender may or may not be charged for the engaged call depending on the policy of their line supplier. Some charge when the call connects (e.g. it rings), some when the call is routed to the receiving network.
If it's engaged, the sender machine won't physically pull the paper into the machine and the display will normally say "engaged" or similar, so they know even if they wander off and return since the fax is still in the in-tray not the out-tray.0 -

Care to name a supplier that charges people when the landline number they call is engaged.0 -
Thinking laterally about this..
do you have a computer?
if so , get a fax modem,
1. there as cheap as chips
2. the fax/voice mail software is really cool these days,
answers the phone, saves messages, faxs,
3. link it with a printer /scanner and hey presto... job done.
its what I would use.
ofcouse if you dont have computer ignore this and stop posting.. :rotfl:0 -

Hey, my fax machine was WAY ahead of its time, has an inbult web browser and everything!! :rotfl:0 -
So anyways, getting back to the subject, can I also "send" faxs via this modem you mention?
(is a fax modem one of those old things you used to find in old computers PCI where it had the RJ11 phone jack port? If so, I've got a ton of them from old computers from over the years...)
So regarding this thingymagiq. I just plug it into my PC's PCI port, and then what? Go find some software that handles fax's? Then? Do I just configure it for to my standard telephone line, nothing else required? If so, thats even better. But the problem with this would be, the machine would have to be running in order to recive a fax right? I can't just route it to the printer without the need for the PC to be on?0 -
theres this thing called ebay..
Type in Voice Fax modem.
USB 2.0 External Dial Up Modem Voice Fax 56K V.92 Win 7 £9.45
ask if it has voice software with it, once you plug it it it will send faxes from word , or send from your scanner,
It works like a printer as far as your computer is concerned. only instead of printing it sends as a fax.
Voice and incoming calls can be handled by the software to, so it answers your phone ect.
only downside is your computer has to be on, if in standbye mode, all the time if you want it to collect calls 24/7
