Hi, I was just wondering how to set up a fax machine... How do you program the number in, etc? I picked up a second hand one and it came with no manual.

1) Do you just plug it into the phone socket and it picks up the number?
2) Also, is it possible to make calls and recive faxs at the same time? Or is it like dial-up internet... One at a time?
3) O, and lastly, what number do I give to the person trying to send me a fax? Just the same landline number? Any extensions?
4) Also how much does talktalk charge for faxing?

Thanks!

As fax numbers are (generally) standard landline telephone numbers, I'll stab a guess they charge the same for a fax as what they charge you for making an ordinary call to a static landline.
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.

Hi, thanks. Just another question, is it possible to make a call, while reciving a fax etc? Or do I need to keep switching the cables between them?

Hi we got a fax machine and just plugged it into the phone line, we use the phone that is on the fax as the house phone, you can't phone and fax at the same time. I've set it up so it will ring for 4 rings after this it goes straight to fax if a fax or carries on ringing for a phone call.

Hi, thanks, Is there anyway to use them phone splitters perhaps for it to work? If not, I take it a sperate phone line with a different number is needed?

No. You have one line and the fax needs the line to send or receive a fax and the phone needs the line to make or receive a voice call.

Your can plug a fax and a phone into the line using a doubler plug but that makes no difference to the use - only one or the other can be used at any time.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

For outgoing calls there is no big problem. If the fax wants to use the line, it 'picks up' for itself and with the phone you pick that up as normal. They can be plugged into the same line - your only problem is if the fax picks up when you are on the phone or vice versa - but you can put the phone down and a good fax should recognise that it does not have a dialling tone and clear down.

On incoming calls it is more difficult. Neither you nor the fax machine can predict whether the incoming is fax or voice. So your callers might get a fax tone, which can be offputting. There used to be fax switches available which would determine whether the incoming call was fax or voice and route accordingly. I think this would require a small adjustment of your premises wiring - but I don't know whether these are still available.

Question: What if I'm on the phone to someone, and a fax is trying to come through... What happens? Does it wait in line till I hang up? Also, is it possible to "send" a fax while on the phone to someone?

    Thanks!

Work it out for yourself. A fax call is just an ordinary voice call with fax signals on it. So if you are on the phone to someone and someone else is trying to ring you. Or you are on the phone and someone tries to ring out.

So the fax dosn't come through if I was already on the phone? Or does it "hold" till I hang up?
