Foreign Mobile Phone Contracts

I would like to apologise in advance if this has already been answered and would be equally happy if someone could direct me towards another post that answers my question.

My dilemma is as follows. I am a student moving to France in August for a year. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to what the best options for me are with regards to mobile phones, I currently have a contract with 02 which expires in a month.

I appreciate your reply and I am aware that some companies who operate here also operate in france e.g. Orange Fr. However I was more interested in whether a contract or pay as you go is the best option to take? Is there anyone with previous experience of this? I have heard that it is quite expensive in comparison with the UK.
