New tv, old vcr

I know I'm a teckie thicko but bear with me! I've just bought a new Panasonic telly (gave up, finally, the old analogue). I've got all the Freeview channels but for some reason my old vcr (Sanyo) won't tape any of these, it only tapes stuff from the original 'earthly' five. I've tried re-tuning the video but no joy. Does this mean I have to buy a new video now as well? I'm assuming it's because the vcr is old style and can't 'cope' with the freeview channels.

Your VCR can only record analogue pictures it cannot decode digital the images into analogue.
remember your VCR is not taking the feed from your TV it is taking the feed from the aerial before the TV.
The best solution will be to purchase a freeview PVR box.0 -
If your TV has a "fully wired" (aka, bi-directional) SCART socket (most have at least 1), then you can send the Freeview channels out of this in to your VCR and record via the "line in" or "aux", or whatever it is called on your VCR.
Only downside is that you will have to watch what you record.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
The whole point of recording is so you can watch it?0

True, but I'm guessing the OP wants to record stuff they can't watch as it is broadcastMoneymaker wrote: »The whole point of recording is so you can watch it?Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -

I absolutely agree, if you've got a nice shiny new TV then get a PVR to go with it, it will change the way to watch TV!
By the way, a 'Freeview+' PVR is the Freeview version of Sky+.
There are loads out there, but a lot of people seem to like Humax as a solid performer. If you don't watch loads of TV and don't want to spend too much, then stick to one with a smaller hard drive - such as the Humax PVR9300T... which is about £150 from Amazon.
You'll be amazed at how different the quality is in comparison to VHS - but you'll miss the noise a tape makes when it rewinds!0
