Changes to Sky HD packs confirmed.

Currently the £10/month HD charge gives you all the HD channels (except Sports or Movies) even if you only have 1 Sky mix package.

It had been rumoured over the last few weeks over on the SkyUser and DigitalSpy sites that this was to change. With the delivery of this months Sky mag, it's now been confirmed.

From early October the HD channels you receive will be totally dependent on your TV package.

Can't find anything official on the Sky website yet, except where it's mentioned in the T&C's on the new customer build page.

Does this pave the way for the other rumoured change, which was that Sky would cease the £10 charge for HD channels altogether to compete with Virgin Media who currently do not charge a monthly fee for their HD content?

    I would think so.

Hard to see how you have reached that conclusion other then just wishful thinking.

Well, I was told by someone high up who was involved with the HD service when I worked for Sky, that they would bin the £10 HD charge when the customer base reached some level.

HD is still a new technology with huge capital investment being required (for example the new Sky HD studios being built not just the broadcast equipment required). There is no chance that they will abolish the charge until he costs are recouped and even then they will need something new to replace the revenue stream. What sky has said is you will get more and more for your £10 by the continual adding of new channels without increasing the price.

I think the correct translation for that is:

"more of the same on a different channel which we've repeated several hundred times already but this time is in HD or psuedo HD"
