What an interesting read, but unfortunately I have bought a sonic from ebay....0

I've just modified a Watchman power tube to accept replaceable batteries. I cut off the copper top cap, extended it by soft soldering on an identical cap from which I'd sawn off the end, cut a bayonet fitting type slot into one side of the extended cap and then inserted a small self-tapping screw into the wall of the power tube to match the bayonet slot. I then added a small spiral screw from the base of an old torch to form the upper battery contact. This is all for an aged neighbour -- personally I have a roofing tile batten marked at 500 litre intervals -keep it simple. I reckon that the batten method reads to better than 25 litres.0
